DMC Dante + GoW Hades = Dante's Inferno?

PSM3_DantesInferno.jpg

Let me know if you've heard this before: An action-adventure game with combos and quick time events in which you play a protagonist named Dante and have to save your loved one from harrowing danger. No, it's not a Devil May Cry sequel/remake/prequel, because it's not that wussy Dante, but the more famous one that wrote The Divine Comedy. You might remember Tiny Dancer telling us all about EA's announcement of the Dante's Inferno game that the EA Redwood Shores developer is currently working on. Well, in the upcoming PSM3 magazine, the writers get a closer look at the upcoming action title from the studio that produced Dead Space and have a few comparisons to make of their own:

"Button-for-button the controls are identical to GOW's - from using the right stick to evade, to regular and heavy attacks being mapped to Square and Triangle."

The article goes on to explain that the game also has the staples of combo attacks, rapidly-changing targets, and quick time event sequences that seem to be the standard fair for action games nowadays; however, they are quick to note what sets this game apart from the rest:

"What really sets this apart from God of War is the setting. Dante's trip through hell is altogether more unpleasant, twisted creatures burst from doorways, lava spews from inverted crosses and bottomless fiery pits yawn deep beneath your feet."

So apparently the setting (i.e. the Inferno) is what makes this game different. Well I guess the game has the God of War like controls and gameplay are good news for all fans of the action genre; however, I fear that the literary world may never be the same if the game takes too many rights with the story. Optimistically, I see some potential for a possible deeper message in the game if somehow the nine circles of sin and their punishments are worked into the game; yet somehow I have a feeling that those will merely be steppingstones for enemy design and not for internal/moral conflict.

Seriously, if anyone has read the book is is hard to get excited about this game. How its going to make an interesting game to be a character who faints all the time and is never allowed to touch those in hell is completely beyond me. It is either going to be boring as hell or a complete bastardization of source material. Color me unimpressed.

I still say that it would have been better, and more accurate to the original text, if it were a point-and-click adventure.

I dunno, it would have been better if they used an 'inspired by' tagline for the influence Dante's Inferno has on the game, from the gameplay footage they've shown, it definitely looks to be a somewhat bastardization, with Dante wielding a crucifix and such. I'm just trying to stay optimistic. :)
