Future of Blu-Ray: Movies And Games On One Disc

Movies and videogames work in close relation to eachother. Sometimes that relationship goes sour with terrible movies based on games or vice versa, but the relationship between the two mediums has maintained throughout those hardships. According to a recent interview with PS3 director of hardware marketing John Koller, that relationship will get even stronger with movies and the games based on them on the same Blu-ray disc in the not too distant future.
"We are actively pushing, and the way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc," said John Koller, director of hardware marketing for the PS3. "There are a lot of developers who say, we have this game based on a movie, wouldn't it be great to marry these concepts? We will definitely see this stuff this year."
It almost seems too good to be true, and yet at the same time it makes perfect sense. Blu-ray discs are certainly large enough to hold both a game and a movie. The big question on my mind is price. New PS3 games typically go for $59.99 and new Blu-ray movies are around $29.99, so something in the $70-75 range would be ideal in my book. I'm guessing we'll see older game/movie combos released before newer ones, so I expect to see Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda, and Quantum of Solace, possibly as soon as this summer.

For this to succeed, first games based on movies (and movies based on games, *shudder*) have to start being made... how can I say this... better.
I agree... and I think doing this will only hinder that for several reasons
1) Time constraints.... the movie and game will be released simultaneously... so if one of them is a little behind schedule I doubt they will want to delay the other... which means it will be rushed.
2) as games get more advanced and start using up a full blu-ray disc (like MGS4 did)... having the movies take up vital disc space will mean that the game will not be aiming for the full potential that it could achieve... and may suffer because of it.
3) REGION LOCKING!! PS3 games currently aren't region locked... but blu-ray movies are. Putting the two together will undoubtably mean that they will be region locked again. Taking one step forward and 2 steps back is never a good idea.
John Woo's "Stranglehold Special edition" is what I think to be an early test to marrying Movies and Game related movies on one Blu-ray disk.
Though the quality of the movie included " Hard Boiled" wasn't the greatest it does add a bit of value to the purchace of games special editon. By that I mean it helps introduce gamers who are not familiar with John Woo films and the character of Tequila who you play in the "Stranglehold" game. It has been a while since I've seen "Hard Boiled" so I don't remember if they took other characters from it and used it in "Stranglehold"
I guess it depends on what they want to accomplish with the movie to game property. With that very much agree with cerberus635 points on this topic.
For an example of a movie that's out and a up coming game release is "Wanted". The game is supposed to have the story continue from the movie so including a game and movie on 1 disk or maybe 2 would not be a bad idea. But then would the cost be more or the same? Would the quality of the Blu-Ray movie and game be compromised by the space on a Blu-Ray?
I can't believe I forgot about this one when I wrote the article this morning, but I'd also expect Riddick: Dark Athena to come with the Blu-ray of Chronicles of Riddick (and possibly Pitch Black as well) on the disc.
i can almost hear the sony marketing execs.
"Now will you buy our hardwear?"
on a more serious note, a big problem is that video game tie-ins are released to coincide with the theatrical debut, NOT the dvd/blu-ray release. by the time the blu-ray release comes around you have already decided you didn't want to play what ever shovelwear tie-in was released months ago.
since the game on the blu-ray would have been out already for an amount of time, the up charge would have to be pretty small to make it seem worth it.
