"Gaming Essentials" Stretches The Definition

wiigirlguitar.jpg

When I saw a link to an article titled "Four Fantastic Gaming Essentials for the Nintendo Wii Video Game Console," I clicked on it curious to see what this website might think are the top four Wii games in existence right now. You know, the essential games that should definitely be in every Wii owner's library. But when I got there, I found that it was in fact about Wii peripherals that they considered "essential." And as I read on, I discovered that TheCelebrityCafe.com has a very loose definition of the word!

First up, they suggested Energizer's Power & Play charger, which I can't really dispute. I don't have one of the various dedicated charger packs — I just make do with regular rechargeable batteries — but I definitely agree that some kind of renewable power source is a must for any and all gaming devices. It was with their second item that they totally lost me.

The NERF Wii Sports Pack? Really? Did Wii Sports really become that much more fun for these people to play when they attached a NERF baseball bat, golf club and tennis racket to their Wiimote? And suggesting the NERF Wii Racing Wheel has me suspicious that they're underwritten by the company. Although to be fair, their description that the NERF foam makes the wheel more comfortable to grip almost sounds plausible. Almost.

But the one that really cracked me up was the Aly & AJ Wii Girl Guitar. Specifically designed to work with Guitar Hero and Rock Band, it's so pink and heart-shaped, it's almost so awful that it's awesome. But "essential"? Hardly. I love when websites that have no business writing about videogames offer up these kinds of lists. They're always good for a chuckle. I mean, any site that writes a positive review of Fugitive Hunter can't be taken at all seriously!

Although it did get me thinking about what I would consider to be essential peripherals for the Wii. Definitely a rechargeable battery pack or batteries. I'd also go with a good-sized SD card for downloading games. Maybe even a Classic Controller to make playing some of those downloaded games a little easier. But honestly, that's about it. And that's only three things. All those other add-ons just seem silly and unnecessary to me... how about you?
