Nicalis Duo Interviewed, Tease Me Once Again

With their first original WiiWare effort part of the Independent Games Festival, Gamasutra's Eric Caoili took some to sit down with Nicklas Nygren and Tyrone Rodriguez to discuss all things Night Game, Knytt, and their port of the freeware classic Cave Story. The interview sheds some light on some of the more technical aspects of each project while revealing some captivating insight into how the pair creates their highly emotional and conceptual experiences. One of the more interesting snippets from the interview included Rodriguez's thoughts on originality in games...
Many have complained about the lack of original, quality releases from third-party studios. What's your opinion on the current WiiWare market?TR: I think WiiWare is doing well for being such a young service. Big publishers are taking notice and creating games. Look at the money Hudson is putting into it with games. That alone speaks well for WiiWare.
But I'm not sure I agree with complaints regarding the lack of originality in games. Original games don't always sell enough to be considered worthwhile investments for publishers or developers so it's a tough situation.
Unfortunate, but true. But hopefully things like WiiWare, PSN, and XBLA have done things to help minimize the financial risks involved with original games.
Also of note, the interview mentions that Wii owners should be expecting the release of Cave Story in the near future with Rodriguez quoted as saying that they are "shooting to wrap it up really soon, in April" with Night Game coming in late summer. Read the rest of the interview over at Gamasutra for other info, including their thoughts on Cave Story creator Daisuke Amaya's next game.
