NPD Results Still Bring Out The Best/Worst In People

NPDs tend to bring out the worst in people (or the best if you're sitting on the sidelines waiting for a laugh), but this month's results seemed to get a certain somebody over at Microsoft's camp all riled up. While touting their 53 percent year-over-year sales increase, Aaron Greenberg had a thing our two to say about the competition and the Xbox 360 product management director spared no chance to get digs in at Sony. One the subject of the recently released DLC add-on GTA4: The Lost & Damned, Greenberg said that "if that content was sold at retail, it would be one of the best sellers across all platforms. It would have outsold Killzone 2." NPD sales ranked Killzone 2 at approximately 323,000 units for the few days it was available in the month of February, while no hard numbers for The Lost & Damned have been released, but many have speculated that it's already sold over a million digital downloads.
While this may be a little harsh, things got nasty when Greenberg described Sony's hardware status to Gamasutra...
The executive painted a particularly bleak picture of the PlayStation brand at retail, saying retail partners have characterized it as "hemorrhaging," in part because many existing PlayStation 2 owners are migrating to Xbox 360 rather than PlayStation 3."You can't underestimate that we're half the price of the PS3 at a time when consumers were looking for great value," he said. "The PS3 was down in February two percent even with the launch of Killzone 2 -- that's months of year-over-year declines. Xbox continues to head north while the PS3 is heading south. We're gaining share."
With statements like these you would think that these two companies were fighting for first place instead of a bitter struggle to for second place. Of course, Greenberg doesn't have any viciousness aimed at February's biggest sellers, the Wii and DS. Nintendo's platforms had a very respectable month with 753,000 and 588,000 units sold respectively. These figures more than showed up the 360 (391,000) and the PS3 (276,000).
