Xbox Live Community Watch - 3/27/09

While it's a little disappointing that this week's community games lineup didn't include the game making tool Kodu, which I had hoped would release this week to coincide with GDC, but this week still brought a healthy selection of community games to devour.
Yay
- Supercow - 400 MS points. Supercow is just awesome. The platforming gameplay can stray a bit on the easy side most of the time, but there's a ton of exploration in each level and every part of the game just oozes with personality. Highly recommended for anyone nostalgic for a good old mascot platformer.
- Battle Havoc - 400 MS points. Battle Havoc could be considered a real-time version of the classic Worms games. Though it doesn't have Worms' weapon variety, that actually helps the game because it encourages you to implement more strategy as to which weapon you use. There's also a single-player challenge mode to compliment the multiplayer deathmatch modes.
- Little Racers - 400 MS points. Little Racers takes on the retro style of a top-down racing game. With over 15 tracks and 40 cars with different stats it definitely gets you your money's worth in gameplay. Speaking of gameplay, the controls do take a little while to get used to, and you'll probably hit a lot of walls in the process, but once you get it there's a lot to like in this racer.
- A Fading Melody - 200 MS points. If you like to see games used as an art form, you need to play this game. You play in the dream of a coma patient, a world that is entirely black and white. As you defeat enemies light and color return to the world around you. It's like a poem written as a 2D platformer. A Fading Melody may not be for everyone, but it's definitely an experience that sticks with you, and one of my favorite community games to date.
- Solar - 200 MS points. You play as the sun, and must fly around collecting planets to orbit you and asteroids to orbit the planets as moons. But there are also other suns out there trying to do the same. There are challenge missions to complete or you can fly around collecting planets at your leisure. It's a bit hard to explain, but it's a lot of fun.
Ay?
- Dromedary - 200 MS points. The closest thing I can compare Dromedary to would be Oregon Trail. You and your camel are crossing the desert and need to balance each day the pace that you run or walk, whether you're going to use some of your limited water supply, or whether you're going to rest to regain energy. And to keep you moving along there is a lion chasing you. It's a lot of fun and very creatively done in a comic strip style, but once you figure out a pace that works you can beat the game fairly quickly every time.
- Go Go UFO Smackdown - 400 MS points. Essentially, this game is a 4-player version of pong, with each player given a side of the screen. If you get some friends together this one can be a great choice.
- Rocket Fart - 200 MS points. You control a guy who must hover above a pit of lava using only his flatulence to propel him. To maintain his level of gas, food will fly across the level like tacos and pizza. There are also flaming rocks that will fly across the level that you need to dodge adding a bit of challenge to the game.
Nay
- Calculator 360 - 200 MS points. It's a calculator, on your Xbox 360. There's really not much else to say. It's a good calculator, but you should ask yourself, "do I really need a calculator on my Xbox 360?" If you answered yes then this will give you a good calculator with sin, cos, tan, cot, factorial, and more, but I just don't think there are many people that would answer yes.
- Clock 24-7 - 200 MS points. It's a clock. Actually, it's several clocks, ranging from your standard wall clock to more obscure ones, like a close-up picture of a cat's face with clocks in both eyes. There are also some digital clocks that have alarms built in, so you could use your 360 as an alarm clock. How you could sleep to need an alarm clock with the loud 360 fan going is a completely different story.
