Riddick-ulous DRM Scheme Ahoy
It's going to happen, I have my eyes on the clock and I'm timing for when the shit storm starts. I give it a day or two. Atari has announced that their upcoming title Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena will contain an install limited activation scheme. Yep, let the wave begin.
The DRM will monitor hardware profiles and limit installs, preventing the software from working on more than 3 machines. So long as your machine is never upgraded, you will not see an issue, and Atari has already stated that calling them to increase your limit is always an option (on a case by case basis).
Will this stop piracy? Nope, at least, not for more than a few hours. Will it piss off their target market? You betcha.

In full swing already, and they are absolutely 100% correct to boycott and pirate these games.
I remember Atari are notorious for having their games leaked up to a week before release, well my estimations that should be 200,000 downloads. I would never upload anything a week before release costing them tens of thousands of sales. Not me, never.
Adding to my list of companies to boycott until they publicly apologize and abandon all DRM.
Well, I know what I'm never going to pay for. I mean, I wasn't going to anyway. It's not even worth pirating. I just plain don't want to play it. But, you know, even if I did, I'm not buying it. So there.
Riiiight... cos illegally downloading games is a good moral thing to do. WTF????
Sorry fellas, I'm with Atari on this one. Sure, they need to find a better solution to combat piracy but does that really give you the right to steal?
After reading so many customer reviews on amazon (from the link Neo provided)... WTF!?!?!?! Its not a freaking rental service... I personally don't see the issue and with harddrives now getting into the teras there shouldnt be a space issues so no need to uninstall.
Should we really be advocating piracy because we don't like DRM??
Yes, I see no problem with such advocation, I had no interest in this game now instead will ensure it's distributed around all the usual places.
It isn't about stopping piracy, it has never been about stopping piracy. It's completely about ensuring they keep control of products you've paid for.
When did people decide that allowing big corporations to dictate terms of something you spent your money on was moral?, I find it instantly more villifiable to roll over and accept these edicts than it is to pirate them.
Over time it's progressed from needing the CD in the drive to only been allowed to install it 3 times, what comes next?
Intrusive DRM: Hurting the paying customer for over 10 years!
Pirating a game, of course, is not legal. But there are certain...individuals that, when they see a game that is all DRM'ed up the ass will pirate said game out of pure joyous spite =3
Only if the game is worth half a rat's ass of course.

"WTF!?!?!?! Its not a freaking rental service..."
Paying good money for artificially limited time with a product? It kind of is. It's something even worse when the product is only artificially scarce as well.
"I personally don't see the issue and with harddrives now getting into the teras there shouldnt be a space issues so no need to uninstall."
Check out Uncle Pennybags, new hard drive every day, throws out money on Riddick games.
Most of the considerable shelf space taken up in my house is based on my right to buy something, lose interest in it for a few years, and then pick it up again. Why do you hate freedom? Seriously, I don't throw away games, and PC games have the resale value of a condom, and I don't think it's fair I should have to keep a game installed forever just in case I ever want to play it again. Besides which, the thing is for Windows. Windows is unstable. I can't demolish and rebuild the house without disturbing the furniture.
"Should we really be advocating piracy because we don't like DRM??"
Yes. You mistreat your customers? No customers. I'm glad it's finally starting to come around to the mainstream.
@ SuperSaiyanSamueru:
Get some foresight.
In 10 years. I'm not going to be using the same computer.
In 10 years, I will want to dig out my old purchases and play them.
In 10 years, Atari's activation server won't be there.
I still play Pacman, now and then. I shouldn't have to buy it 20 times. I like owning my purchases, not renting them until Atari decides to bilk me again, and again.
WAKE UP. This DRM has NOTHING to do with piracy. It doesn't stop a SINGLE pirate. What it's there for is to keep you buying the same product many times over the years as your copy inevitably self-destructs.
You not interested in the game? Don't buy it!
You're interested in the game, but the DRM scheme annoys you? Buy the game and install a crack!
You're not interested in the game and the DRM scheme annoys you? Pirate it!
Up and fully cracked in all the usual places.
Personally, I wonder what developers have to say about this DRM crap.
And yes, I fully agree with "This DRM has NOTHING to do with piracy. It doesn't stop a SINGLE pirate".
As it seems from consumer opinions, it rather accomplishes the opposite.
