Silent Hill Shattered Memories: Sissy Harry Edition
![]()
As a self-professed fan of Silent Hill, I'll pretty much eat up whatever Konami dishes out to me. So long as there are weird no-face nurses. Seriously, how hot is that? It would appear initial details are surfacing for the new Nintendo Wii title Silent Hill: Shattered Memories... and those hoping to get into the title might be a bit disappointed with one key change that has been made to the engine.
- Harry is moved using the control stick, the Wii remote is used to aim the flashlight
- When you look at something Harry will vocally respond
- No load times
- The Wii remote acts as your cell phone, and the static noise comes out of the Wii remote speaker
- Combat has been removed from the game, you can only flee
- When the monsters chase you the Z button will allow you to break through doors, climb fences, through windows etc.
That's right. There is no combat. None, just one big, nelly Harry. I don't really know how it will work with the title on a whole, but I'm certainly not going to knock it until I try it.

I think the no combat is a grand idea myself. It'd be an actual SCARY survival horror game [if executed right]!
It's not like there's many of those left, especially regarding a certain series...
I was really excited to see this announcement, but that lack of combat... That's different. But I think I appreciate different enough that I'm still rather excited for this development. I've played the hell out of Silent Hill, this will be interesting to see it in a different, run for your life light. Plus, the combat in Homecoming sucked so terribly, I'm almost glad to see there's not a combat mechanic to ruin so... I dunno, I've always been intrigued by the concept of a survival horror where you can't fight the monsters and have to run. I'm very curious about this experiment.
It'll be a shame if it's not true (April fools) because it could be amazing like Haunting Ground.
Or like Clock Tower.
Really. No combat would be brilliant!
Agreed with the general consensus. Fighting has ruined the recent Silent Hill games.
The combat in the first silent hill was horrid from what I recall. Loved the story, but I remember being frustrated by the controls and overwhelmed by monsters.
On the other hand, I also remember growing frustrated with Clocktower 3 and always having to run and hide every thirty seconds from a monster :)
I can see how cutting down combat would help (I haven't played, but heard the series has gone heavily into the combat area), however, I think that completely removing it is a mistake. I mean, if I saw one of those damned babies with knives coming at me really slowly, sure, I'd run, but once my back was to a wall, you'd better believe that I'd turn around and punt that little bundle of joy halfway down the block!
so... the info was released on April fools and the latest news was sent by email by a reader of GoNintendo, and we're lapping this up?
I must admit I'm excited, but am not going to speculate until official word has been released.
It´s pretty much official, here´s the link for the article:

Climax is again in charge and if they learned with Origins and the mistakes from Double Helix(on Homecoming), we can have a blast. Plus, I think the lack of combat is brilliant: in a world where RE5 is a survival horror, SH:SM is a slap on Capcom´s face!
I'm really glad that other people see the comparison with Clock Tower as I was thinking the same thing while reading that. I think that if executed properly it could be done great...except...what about Cybil and the plot based combat?
For plot based battles, I'm assuming button mashing sequences. Lots and lots of button mashing sequences. Ugh...
Still, should be interesting to see how this turns out. Doubt they could muck it up TOO badly.
Mister VI:
Relax. This is right from the NP article:
"To be clear, these chase sequences aren't quick-time events; you have full control over Harry and can choose whichever path you see fit to his destination. For their part, don't expect the monsters to simply follow behind you. They'll take alternate routes to try to cut you off, and they'll use their numbers to flank you whenever possible."
I share the concern of Climax's involvement with this one. The series has taken a seriously disappointing turn once Team Silent took a step back (too much emphasis on combat, particularly bad combat). That said, this is an opportunity to take SH back to its roots as a psychological horror game rather than the Resident-Evilesque survival horror that ruined SH: Origins and SH: Homecoming.
The flashlight gimmick already has me shivering, and that this is a re-imagining of the original SH alleviates my concerns a little.
Here's hoping they get it right!
What's wrong with Climax? I thought they did a fine job with Origins.
Totally agree. Clocktower +1. No combat makes the game all the scarier
