Xbox Live Community Watch - 4/3/09

It's another slow week for community games, with only three released. Although I suppose even that is more than Microsoft offers with only one Live Arcade game released each week. And even better, all three games excellent so check them out.

  • NextWar: The Quest For Earth - 200 MS points. Tower defense games seem to be everywhere now, and with NextWar they have finally infiltrated the community games. Thankfully, this is a really solid one. It has a great retro wire-frame look to it that should appeal to fans of games like Geometry Wars. If you like tower defense games definitely get it, and even if you're like me and aren't normally a fan of this type of game it's still well worth checking out.
  • BeatBlox - 200 MS points. It has long been my policy that adding rhythm gameplay to any game will make it awesome, and so when BeatBlox tried to mesh rhythm and Bejeweled I was pretty excited. And it works very well. You need to be quick moving blocks to create chains in the rhythm of the music, and BeatBlox uses a brilliant control scheme to do it. It may not top Lumines as the king of rhythm puzzle games, but it's a worthy competitor and, at only $2.50, well worth a download.
  • Fish Racer Arcade - 200 MS points. You and up to 3 other friends or AI opponents take on the role of fish in what is less of a race and more a fight for survival. Touching any obstacle causes instant death, and it's your job to help the process along by ramming into the other fish to knock them into harm's way. I'd only recommend getting this one though if you have other people to play it with since matches against the AI usually don't last much longer than a few seconds. It's also worth mentioning that the victory animations for each fish are absolutely adorable.
