Rumorama: Lucasarts Reviving A Classic Franchise At E3

monkey island 5.jpg

Consider this one a Rumor with a capital "R," but there is word that Lucasarts may be delving into their retro catalog of games at this year's E3. Specifically, Destructoid is citing an unnamed source that mentioned Lucasarts' intention to revive a classic game franchise. What's more is that apparently games like Monkey Island and Grim Fandango were mentioned as examples of what might be on the way.

With only a single, unnamed source, my better judgment tells me not to expect much to come of this at E3. But at the same time, I want this to be true so badly that I'm allowing myself to believe it just enough for there to be a glimmer of hope. Of the two mentioned I'd say Monkey Island is the more likely candidate, but since it's Lucasarts there is always the possibility that they could go a completely different route and bring back the X-Wing vs Tie Fighter series. Which would still be nice, but it's no Monkey Island.

What do you think? Is a Monkey Island or Grim Fandango sequel on the way? And if so, would you buy it?

Grim Fandango deserves a sequel.

An updated Monkey Island would rock.

Tie fighter or x-wing would be heaven on earth...

*one small cravat, they must be done well...*

Heck Zack McCrackin would be awesome too.

Please don't let this be true!

Nowadays Lucasarts excel in turning gold into crap

Lucasarts can do whatever the heck they want with monkeys and sad flamenco dancers, just give me a real battlefront game. I, like everyone else I know, am not interested in getting a PSP but I would still like to snipe wookies please.

I want another Maniac Mansion/Day of the Tentacle game.

Anything but Star Wars. They can continue to beat that horse all they want...I want a non-SW series entry though.

Grim Fandango really was one of the best games i ever played (and still do).
I would love to be able to play Manny in other games but I know that they wouldnt capture the same style and humour that mark the original.

I doubt they will make a sequel, I dont think the companies think there is enough fanbase for those style of games anymore.

Though it is a committed one:

Loved Grim Fandango...I'd certainly be interested in a sequel.

It's gotta be true... voodoo lady said she was on a five game contract with LucasArts in the fourth Monkey Island game. If they don't make one, they'd be facing a lawsuit... hmm, wonder if she could get Phoenix Wright to represent her.

You had us at Monkey Island.

This post gave me such a "I don't know how to feel just now" vibe. It's so good and so bad simultaneously.

Grim Fandango would be my pick (especially as I haven't played the others). It would be great if a re-release did well and helped to revive the genre, particularly as Dreamfally chapters (which is a wonderful if slightly bastardized adventure game) is nowhere to be seen.

Except Grim Fandango was so self contained, it ended and ended well so a new game would have to akwardly shoehorn itself into its neatly wrapped perfection.

They could theoretically do a remake with a graphics overhaul, except being all cartoony Grim Fandango has actually held up pretty well, and would probably loose more in being updated (various monkeys in the chain deciding to mess with whats not broken)than it would gain in graphics shinyness.

Furthermore I doubt the doublefine staff would have anything to do with it, and LUCASARTS would.

Lastly a bad sequel can really f!!! up my opinion of a game. I loved max payne 1 so much, that I just bought 2 when it came out (without reading reviews etc.) it sucked sooooooooo hard, I played it once, was devastated, and have never played it again. It took me like a year to forget 2 enough that I could enjoy 1 again. I don't want my memories of Grim Fandango tarnished by the cheap spectacle of GF2: Lucasarts searches for curlys gold.

No.
I mean, what I hope is that LucasArts reissues their old classics and puts them up on GOG, for example.
But they shouldn't make pointless sequels to their old classics!
I would love to see new adventures from LucasArts, but then, all the talent of the heyday has already left the company.

Grim Fandango wasn't so financially successful anyway, and interest in Monkey Island certainly waned after the fourth part.

I'd certainly be up for another Day of the Tentacle game. I'm still not sure if I ever managed to properly beat it from back in the day... I do still sorta miss the era of the point and click adventure though with absurd levels of puzzling going on. If done as a sandbox style game it might actually fit in with modern sensibilities pretty decently.

(The only modern-ish game that I can think of that still had absurd steps towards problem solving like "putting a hamster in a freezer to incur someone's wraith" was that kinda weak Buffy game where you grab cooking oil from a hot dog stand, traverse across three or four levels of a mall fighting vampires and zombies, break into a bookstore attic, then grease an elevator cable to retrieve a key from a corpse in the shaft...)

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
