Shout Out: Second Chances

As you may know, this past weekend I got away from the GayGamer Castle for a little mini-vacation. Being more than a little hooked on games, I choose to bring my PS3 along for some drunken Singstar and maybe a movie or two if outdoor activities got rained out. To my surprise, I rediscovered a game that I didn't really "get" upon its initial release. While Fruit Brute was quick to give Flower some love when he got his hands on it, I was more than a little resistant to its charms. I mean, the game is two hours for the average player's first run through and stretched my patience during the levels you can actually fail (sorta), but I got to see the game in a new light when some of my non-gamer friends picked up the controller. As soon as I looked past the title's more gamey qualities and looked at is as an abstract piece of "interactive fiction," the point of experience became clear to me.
This got me thinking about what other games I've come back to after their release that made much better impression the second time around. I wasn't exactly thrilled with Dragon Quest 8 when I purchased it at launch, but I ended up loving it when I restarted my game a few months down the road. Dead Space was another title that didn't get my blood pumping until I got over the fact that it could have been called "Resident Evil: ...in Space!" (which is why I ended up cherishing it even more than RE5). I've even discovered the magic of old school games I once thought were broken (Rocket Knight Adventures, Journey to Silius, Batman: Return of the Joker).
So let me put this out there for discussion to all you readers, what games didn't excite you at the start ended up being one of your favorites?

Oblivion. The first time I tried it on 360, I never made it out of the sewers. The control scheme turned me off and basically I thought it'd be another of those "walk through dungeons, kill rats" games.
About 6 months later a friend talked me into giving it another chance, and I'm glad I did. I ended up putting 240 hours into the game with my Khajit, and am gonna be putting even more now that I have the PC version.
That would be Silent Hill 2. I finished in one night and was like, "Well, that was alright." Now it's probably one of my top horror titles.
I hoping the same thing will happen with Ico. I gave up playing it the first time because the combat cheesed me off (most likely because I stunk at it), and the pale chick kept getting shallowed into the ground.
