Video: Natural Selection 2 Teaser
I have to admit, some of the people out there that make mods for games like Half-Life and Starcraft can really blow your away with what they produce. That was the case for the team that made the original Natural Selection mod back in 2002 for Half-Life in which they mixed the RTS and FPS genres to interesting effects. Well a few years later, with their own company, that team is hard at work on a standalone sequel to the game, Natural Selection 2, whose teaser trailer is shown above.
Apparently in the game players play as units in either an army of marine Frontiersmen or the vicious alien Kharaa hive. One person from each team is deemed as the 'commander' and plays from an overhead view, building structures, collecting resources, and researching upgrades. Everyone else on the team is an individual soldier (or alien) that can then use the structures and upgrades to help them with attacking the enemy or defending their hive. The two races even have different types of units and upgrades. Marines buy weapons at an Armory or build sentry turrets and siege cannons to assault the enemy. Aliens build upgrade chambers, evolve special abilities and plant traps.
If the basic premise of this game reminds you a bit of the games Savage or Savage 2, you are not alone since that is what I first thought of when I heard about this game; however, the graphics in this game look stunning, and it'll be interesting to see Unknown World's take on how to the mixed genres right. At the same time the team is releasing all their game tools and Lua source code to the public, so I'm sure there will be even more people adding content to the game once it gets a good following. I wonder if someone from their mod community will create a mod that will one day be its own standalone sequel too (contemplating infinity hurts my head).
Looks for the game to drop sometime this Fall, and if you pre-order the game right now you can get into their Beta or even the Alpha if you pay big enough. Until then just enjoy the shiny trailer they've given us.
