DDO Goes Free, But With Purchasable Upgrades

Later this summer, the land of Eberron is going to get a lot easier to get to! Turbine has announced that they are making significant changes to the structure of Dungeons & Dragons Online, which will culminate in what they are calling DDO Unlimited.
DDO Unlimited makes the game free to play for anyone, no subscription needed, and raises the level cap to 20. Free players will have some limits though. They'll only be able to stay near Stormreach, certain races like the Warforged and Drow will remain locked, and advanced classes like Monks will require unlocking. It also looks like 'VIP' subscribers will also be able to make more than 2 characters, have priority access to the login queue, and are the only ones able to get in-game support from live GMs. (among other benefits)
If free players want any of that stuff, they can either purchase them with 'Turbine Points' that are awarded by success in the game, or they can just straight up buy the points with money. Real money. Will all this change be enough to revive interest in this MMO? Time will tell, but it's an interesting business model, for sure.
