E3 09: Heavy Rain Hands On

It wasn't available for playing on the show floor, but upstairs at the Sony booth, I was able to sit down with Guillaume de Fondaumiere, executive producer of Heavy Rain and get some hands-on time with the title. And I'm sorry to say, you guys, I totally broke it. My bad! Seriously, though, it was just an alpha build, so a crash is to be expected. Especially in a game this complex. The scene that I was able to play through (and I call it a scene because that's what it feels like, not a level) was the Mad Jack one that we posted earlier. The game looks fantastic, and while cutscenes are seriously approaching the creepy uncanny valley, the actual gameplay isn't nearly as off-putting. It's still beautifully detailed and well-animated. The left thumbstick controls your head looking around, and pressing R2 moves you forward in whatever direction you're heading. It's a little awkward at first, but not too bad. I was able to question Mad Jack, then do some of that nifty CSI investigating, checking out blood stains and tire tracks with my special glasses. Then Mad Jack pulled a gun on me, and I had to try and fight him off. I didn't do too badly, and managed to get my gun and hold him down. A brief interrogation scene occurred where I tried to play tough and act like I was going to shoot the barrels of gasoline around him (and me, which is why I don't know why he fell for the threat). Unfortunately, Norman Jayden's drug addiction took that inopportune moment to flare up and I totally blew the save, and was thrown into my car and into the compactor. This is when my demo glitched up, and by the time Guillaume was able to fix it, my car was already being shredded... with me in it. Sigh. Still, the experience was an impressive one, and even just from the brief time I spent with the demo, the unique control scheme looks like it could be intuitive when you get used to it. All in all, I came away quite impressed.

This game really looks good...i might picks this one up
Didn't they say a long time ago that they've bypassed the uncanny valley?
