E3 09: Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games

SEGA invited me to check out the upcoming Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games as the developer showed off some of the new additions to the sequel. The character select screen they breezed through seemed to have ten characters from the Mario and Sonic universes, and they revealed that this sequel would contain two new characters: Donkey Kong and Metal Sonic. It's coming out for the Wii and DS again, in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
They revealed three new events on the DS version: Alpine Skiing, which is controlled completely with the stylus, using different flick techniques to control speed, Bobsleigh, where you will actually use the directional pad and face buttons to control both characters leaning in sync to speed up, and Dream Snowboard Cross, which is basically Mario Kart, with power-ups and whatnot. The DS version will also contain an exclusive story mode called Adventure Tours, which will be the first time that SEGA and Nintendo characters will interact with each other.
Then they demoed some new events in the Wii game including Figure Skating, which was super-cute. Mario skated around a blue line, and you shake or wiggle the Wiimote at specific points to do tricks and boost your score. In the final game, there will be six songs to choose to skate to. In Ice Hockey, up to four players can compete with each other, and every pass of the puck boosts its speed, so after a little passing, you can make a heck of a shot at the goal. Dream Ski Cross is so much like Mario Kart that it actually uses the Mario circuit from the Wii game! In fact, I was told that the Dream levels on the Wii version will be based on levels from old SEGA and Nintendo games. It will also support the Wii Balance Board, and tracing patterns with your Wiimote during big jumps pulls off special tricks.
That's all SEGA was willing to show me at E3, but since Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games won't be out until the fall of this year, I'm sure they'll have a few more tricks up their sleeve.
