E3 09: Muramasa

Vanillaware's Muramasa: The Demon Blade may remind you of your NES days, and that's exactly what producer Yoshifumi Hashimoto has in mind: this hack'n'slash Wii exclusive captures the 2D scrolling spirit of Legend of Kage. True to that old-school spirit, the game features no motion control and can be played with the Wiimote and Nunchuck, Gamecube controller, or the Wii Classic controller.
The influence of Vanilaware's previous games, namely Odin Sphere, is immediately obvious in the gorgeous 2D artwork inspired by classical Japanese paintings and carvings. Muramasa's development has been tightly focused, with no online component or multiplayer: this is simple, rewarding hack'n'slash goodness.
The two playable characters each have their own storyline - amnesiac ninja Kisuke and possessed princess Momohime - and will collect and wield 108 swords through the course of the game, each with their own special attack. Easy to pick up and dive right in, Muramasa should carve out a swath of nostalgic gaming when it's published by Ignition in September 09 for North America, and, for Europe, by Rising Star in spring of 2010.
