E3 09: PangYa Fantasy Golf

Call me silly, but there's something about an island with an ancient lore of filling up holes with balls in order to ward of evil spirits that I can get behind. Such is the case with PangYa: Fantasy Golf, and while similar titles has been released on a few other platforms, the PSP release by TOMY marks the first release on a mobile platform in the US as a standalone game instead of being party of the popular PC MMO franchise. Sure, on the surface it looks like your average golf game, but the series offers so much more than simply shooting the back nine with your caddy.
First up there are 18 playable characters in the game, ranging from your typical humans, to quirky sorceresses and pirates, all the way down to dragons and, my personal favorite, bears. Each character has an interesting back story, which unfolds as you play through the story mode of the game with the respective people. All of these characters can then be leveled up as you play with them more, allowing you to grow their stats. Adding to that character customization is the wide variety of clothing, clubs, rings, and accessories that can be purchased in the game that not only give your character a great look and style, but can also increase their stats even more.
The game itself can be played as intensely or as casually as you want, with many different setting customizations in place to help make your game of Fantasy Golf easier or more difficult. There are many lengths of gameplay available from playing a long game of all 18 holes on any of the 9 courses available in the game, all the way down to choosing to play just 3 holes of your choice. On top of that, many of the special moves available in the online version of the game can also be done, giving you some skill and reward for quick reflexes and decision making. Along with the many characters and items available in the game, there is also the neat addition of up to 8-player ad-hoc multi-player games that you can setup with your friends to play.
Overall, the game looks like a good twist on the golf game, with plenty of character and style to keep you entertained on the go. PangYa: Fantasy Golf for the PSP is due out later this month from TOMY, so look to pick it up then, and then go play some golf with your bear. . . I know I will be.
