E3 09: White Knight Chronicles Hands On

Upstairs at the Sony Booth, I was given the chance to play a little bit of the new RPG from Level-5 (of Dark Cloud fame), called White Knight Chronicles. It's pretty much the first real traditional RPG for the PlayStation 3 in fact, the gentleman walking me through it admitted that the plot basically comes down to saving the princess. And while exploring a town, I remarked on my love for the genre's cliché of just wandering into people's homes and rooting through their belongings for treasure without them minding one bit. However, the twist is that the main character, Leonard, is also trying to figure out why he is able to transform into the White Knight. And that, is the big addition to the traditional gameplay.
While playing through some traditional battles that played out in real time but forced you to wait for the opportunity to attack again, I eventually encountered a giant creature. As I wondered how in the world I was supposed to face off against this behemoth, I was instructed to simply activate my special ability to turn into the White Knight. Once enough action points have been accrued through regular battles, Leonard has the ability to turn into the White Knight, who is large enough to take care of the enormous foes. And if you've still got time leftover, the remaining regular-sized enemies are a cinch!
There will also be an online component, allowing up to four friends to battle together, and exclusive items will be available only through multiplayer that you can then use in your single player game. Also, you can create a custom avatar for the game that will be sued in both single and multiplayer so no two are alike. The graphics were stunning, naturally. After battling on a desert plain, I decided to check out one of the fantastically detailed towns, and then journeyed to a forest. I just had time to take out a giant Treant before I was told my time was up. At least they let me finish my battle! White Knight Chronicles is shaping up to be a good choice for Sony's RPG fans, who can check it out when it releases sometime in the fall of 2009.
