E3 2009: Microsoft Press Conference Highlights
As some of you may have already seen from our Live Blogging this morning, Microsoft sure had quite a few surprises to throw out to the gaming public to help kickoff E3 on the right note. I'm going to highlight a few key points from the conference, but you can go back to our live blog of the event and click on the replay button in LiveBlog window to see the entire chat we had.
The first part of the conference started off with Microsoft announcing a number of titles that will be coming to the Xbox 360 in the next year and showcasing a few of them for us. They showed some songs from The Beatles: Rock Band, had Tony Hawk demonstrate the new skateboard for Tony Hawk's RIDE, and announced the sequel Left 4 Dead 2. The also showed off the powerful engine behind Forza 3 which will be exclusively on the Xbox 360.
Of course what's a Microsoft press conference without some Bungie news and this time we got it in doubles. We got to see some hands-on gameplay from Halo 3: ODST after which they showed a brief trailer for Halo Reach which seems to be the next game in the Halo series. Another nice surprise was the announcement of a new Metal Gear Solid game coming the Xbox 360 where players will play as Raiden instead of Soild Snake.
One of the big surprises of the press conference had to be the "Natal Project" which was a mixture of a sensor bar and EyeToy combined into a voice command, motion-sensing, voice recognizing, remote device. They demoed the Natal in various ways showing how it can be used to navigate the Xbox Live by hand gestures, pick up face movement, carry-on voice chat, and even be used to paint. All this being done without the use of any handheld controller. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of this in the months to come, but it sure is an interesting approach to the motion input for games.
