Fallout 3 DLC Mega Mini Review Omnibus

fallout3dlcomnibus.jpg

After a lengthy eighty plus hours, I have finally experienced all that the Capitol Wasteland has to offer. So, as a true Wasteland aficionado, I thought I would share some of my experiences with the currently available DLC. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it however I obviously enjoyed some more than others and each had their strong and weak points. I have listed the various DLC in order of my enjoyment of them. Point Lookout was by far my favorite followed by Broken Steel, The Pitt and finally, Operation Anchorage.

A few notes before I go into the DLC in more detail: Broken Steel is the pack that extends the game's ending and raises the level cap to 30. You do not need to have Broken Steel to play the others, but having the extra levels is a hug bonus, especially when it comes to Point Lookout which is specifically designed for higher level characters.

Make the jump to check out the rundown on all the DLC!

Point Lookout
The Story: A riverboat appears on the shore that will take you to Point Lookout, an abandoned carnival and boardwalk surrounded by swampland. Various adventures eventually lead you to the Calvert Mansion where a mysterious stranger requires your help. But beware! The swamp is filled with with mutated hillbilly types just waiting to kill you.

The Good:

  • Great Gothic horror feeling and trappings

  • Cool new enemies with ramped up difficulties

  • Powerful new weapons including the "Backwater Rifle" (if you can find it)

  • Several Interesting side missions

  • Largest map of all the DLC avaialable

The Not So Good:

  • Requires the purchase of Broken Steel to play effectively

  • Helper characters (Fawkes, Dogmeat, etc.) can not accompany you

  • Starts off challenging but ends rather easily

Broken Steel
The Story: Join the Brotherhood of Steel to help eradicate the Enclave once and for all.

The Good:

  • Extends the original story past the end of the game

  • Raises the level cap to 30

  • Provides a bit more closure to the main storyline

  • Opens up some side missions in the main world that might surprise you

  • Adds some new locations to the already existing map

  • Helper characters can help you with these missions

The Not So Good:

  • Not a lot of new enemy types, just stronger versions of old ones

  • Doesn't offer much in the way of new surroundings

The Pitt
The story: An escaped slave named Wernher claims that the leader of the slaver driven world of "The Pitt" has created a cure for mutations... and he needs you to go in and retrieve it.

The Good:

  • Intriguing story line

  • Great use of moral choices

  • Scary new enemy types

  • Fetch mission included with some cool prizes

The Not So Good:

  • If you've finished the game and do not own Broken Steel you'll have to load up an old save game

  • Finding the items in the fetch mission can be a bit daunting

Operation Anchorage
The story: Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe - the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders.

The Good:

  • Access to some great new weapons and armor including my personal favorite weapon of choice, the Gauss Rifle

  • New gameplay allows for some tactical strategy

The Not So Good:

  • Very straightforward FPS style action

  • No variety in enemies

  • Seems overly simple

In closing I would say that all in all, the DLC for Fallout 3 is terrific. If you're strapped for cash, I would definitely recommend Broken Steel and especially Point Lookout which is an absolute must have. The other two are great if you have the cash and are also quite good for racking up experience and grabbing some new weapons. Big cheers to the Bethesda team for putting so much work and detail into every aspect of the DLC. I am definitely looking forward to more time in the Wasteland, so keep them coming!

Screw the Gauss Rifle, Chinese Stealth Suit forever! Serious, that +Deathclaw Gauntlet is SO fucking cheap. XD My guy can take out Super Mutant Masters in one hit. Only things that give me trouble is like Albino Rad Scorps and Super Mutant Overlords. Another benefit - NO COST. You never need to repair the suit or buy ammo for the Gauntlet if you do it right.

PS - for killing Deathclaws, I'd recommend the Dart Gun and a Flamer, preferably the Rapid Torch Flamer from Broken Steel quest line. To quote Grandia 2, "Deep Friiiiiied goodness! *cackles*"

Весьма возможно. Иногда так действительно случается.
