Music Game DLC Could Affect Music Charts

The Official Charts Company is apparently working on a system wherein sales of music downloaded for games like Rock Band, SingStar and Lips would actually contribute to the weekly music charts. And this would affect the way that labels release songs for the games.
"At the moment we're not including downloads from games, and as a result of that labels aren't promoting their releases through games in the way that they might if sales of these downloads contributed to the charts," pointed out Official Charts Company managing director, Martin Talbot. "They would rather sell a vanilla download through Amazon or 7digital and have it contribute to the charts. As soon as [game downloads] are incorporated, you'll start to see people become much more active in making those tracks available, I think."
That would certainly be a welcome change, because licensing music for games has always been a tricky enterprise. And anything that brings a wider variety of tuneage to the games I play would be much appreciated (Lips, I'm looking at you!). I would also be interested to see if track sales in games could actually have an impact on the mainstream music charts. Guess we'll find out someday...
