New 'Resident Evil' Trilogy To Kick Off In 3D

Everybody and their mother is at Comic Con, so it's no surprise that accidental but tasty crumbs of news should be falling from the lips of bigwigs like, well, crumbs falling from the lips of a bigwig. (It's Friday, and the simile machine is acting up.)
Today we hear from director Paul W.S. Anderson that the new Resident Evil film, Resident Evil: Afterlife will be two things: it'll be released in 3D and will kick off a whole new trilogy. Anderson will be writing and directing and the lovely Milla Jovovich will reprise her role as Alice - new characters from the games will show up as well, and of course some familiar faces from the films.
Anderson:
"I always envisioned Resident Evil as a trilogy of films," he said. "And we've been very lucky where it's a trilogy where the audience has built and built. I wanted to kick off a brand new trilogy. I'm really excited we're doing it [in 3-D] and we're using the same camera system [James] Cameron used for Avatar. There are a lot of exciting things about this one. I don't regard it as Resident Evil 4, I regard it as a re-tooling and rebirth of the entire franchise."
I say a do-over is exactly what the RE film franchise needs (and personally, maybe the game franchise as well, but that's another story, innit?) - but whether you agree or not, the verdict won't be out anytime soon: Resident Evil: Afterlife won't see theaters until September 17, 2010.

I dont WANT them to undo the story -_- I like where they went with the first 3 movies!
Where could anyone go with he end of the third tbh, CerberusTheHitman?
Like 99/% of humanity was wiped out / zombiefied and how would the producers afford the tech needed to use all those Alice clones and have made that 'Japan showdown' a fun one? It just would've been interesting since one Alice is enough to take on the world as it is.
I'm hoping this is a loose RE4 and 'Alice' teams up with Leon, personally. That could be cool.
I'm just really really really curious to see where they're going. If they're planning a whole nother "trilogy", how could it possibly work? The world is pretty much decimated.
Nate, they are basically rebooting the film series.
eh, i love RE movies, but 3d sounds gimmicky.
now, if it was a scratch and sniff movie, like John Water's Polyester that'd be different. Entirely!
The first was okay. Not great.
The second made my eyes vomit.
The third, while still over-the-top madness, was the only one that I really ever feel like going back and watching again and again. Many may disagree with me here- but I thought out of all three it was the best acted, best paced, and had the best action. None of the films had a good story so I leave that element out of my rating system. The third was simply mindless, laugh-out-loud fun. Which was exactly what it needed to be.
If this "reboot" continues to star my favorite Lee-Loo and improves upon the model of the third film I will be looking forward to it.
Lets hope that the director follows a strict What-Not-To-Do by watching and taking notes on the second film and making sure not to repeat the mistakes made in that abysmal thing. MAN that one was a turd.
