Square Announces 'Four Warriors Of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden'

Thanks to a Japanese teaser site and a recent issue of Shonen Jump with some very busy but telling graphics, Square Enix has tipped off the rumor mill about a new Final Fantasy game for the DS: Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden.
The Jump piece doesn't give many details: you'll play as a 14-year-old boy charged by your local king to go off and, yes, rescue the princess; eventually you'll form a party of four, who will save the world. That's Final Fantasy for ya. Coming to Japan this fall, and most likely coming to the western world sometime in 2010.
All-New, Old-School Final Fantasy Announced for DS [GameLife]

I'm intrigued by this. Gaiden games in Japan are typically side stories or retellings of the original versions of a game. Since the original Final Fantasy also started off with the rescuing of a princess, this makes me think that this is a retelling of the original Final Fantasy with a much heavier emphasis on plot with unique characters, as opposed to four nameless ones that differ only according to their job.
I totally agree. I smell a "retelling" of some sort.
Agreed.
Its basically FF1: DS in all but name.
They is nice, but I wish they'd just come out with the Final Fantay VI remake that we've all been waiting for. For many people, it's the best one in the entire series and the update would do incredibly well. What're you waiting for, Square?
In my opinion, remaking (not just porting) FF VI or the PS1-era FFs for the DS would be quite a waste. They're such great games that they'd deserve more time and effort to remake them to increase their greatness.
I'm talking about remaking them to at least PSP, if not to current generation consoles. The games need enhanced graphics, enhanced gameplay, loads of added content and a brand new translation - not a shoddy, haphazardly made DS-version.
As far as this new "Gaiden" goes, it sounds like an utter bore-fest, much too similar to the oldest FFs. Some people like them, I think they are products of their time. No modern game should be like them.
^Agreed. I'll settle for DS ports, but I'd love for them to go with either hidef 2-D hand drawn visuals or take it to a fully 3-D current gen level. I suspect that they wouldn't want to spend that kind of time and money though so I'm not counting on it. Shame though; I'd be way more excited to play a FFVI that looked like XIII than any of the XIII spin-offs, and maybe more than XIII itself.
I'm intrigued as well since I’m also more of a fan of the DS remakes now than brand new games in the series. Will there also be pre-ordering like that of Final Fantasy XIII for PS3? And how much would you shell out for this?
