Video: Final Fantasy XIV Online Debut Trailer, Popup Style
What's better than a debut trailer? A debut trailer in which an adorable lil' Moogle scrolls across the screen pointing out secrets, missable details, and other FFXIV goodnesses. Note the similarity of the first shot of terrain to FFXI's Purgonorgo Isle - as well as the Vana'diel March playing in the background. The hume faces look similar, but older, and only one Elvan-looking character appears in the trailer.
Also note the very busy official logo designed by Yoshitaka Amano, which follows the concept of the "wheel of heroes."

It looks nice, but I sure hope it ends up playing very differently than FFXI - that game had so many things wrong with it.
This is an insult to all final fantasy players. FFXIV is the same as FFXI. I mean the moogle basically spells it out for you. FFXIII better be the shizzz or I'm going to be pissed.
I have to agree with RoyalPeach...I'm a little disturbed how the moogle points out that FFXI = FFXIV. Kind of silly on Square-Enix's part. Hopefully it's much more fast paced and, well, fun.
This is ridiculous - after reading several articles interviewing the developers after the game was revealed in which they repeatedly stress that the game is not FFXI, takes place in a new world with new races, that FFXI characters would not be able to be imported; they go and release this trailer in which significant similarities between the two are directly pointed out. I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan, played most of the games in the main series and many of the spin-offs as well, but I didn't play FFXI (don't have the time to invest in such a game, and I refuse to pay a monthly fee to play a game I've already bought) and it looks like I'll have to forgo playing FFXIV as well. And they haven't even released FFXIII yet, why the hell are they hyping XIV??
This can't be an official Square Video, there are many contradiction with what they said.
First you CAN'T transfer characters, they will look alike with more personnalization capabilities, but that's it.
Also, the first zone being like Purgonorge Isle... well Purgonorgo is an island, the place shown looks more like the Niagara Falls to me...
There are a few other things that are either plain wrong or just weird... I really don't know what to think about this video.
I hope we get some REAL information from SE soon though.
Krel: the pop-ups are GameTrailers' own doing, not S-E's. Most of the "info" in the video is purely speculation, anyway.
I don't agree that the characters look older, though, they're just more detailed than in FF XI, because of the better graphics and the fact that most of the scenes are FMVs.
I hope they make it HEAPS more soloable from the start than FFXI was and they better not threat to delete my toons if I'm inactive....
@Sami: Thank you for the clarification I didn't know ^^"
So just to geek out a bit...
I've played Final Fantasy 11 since the PS2 release in Spring 2004. I've been through a lot in the world of Vana'diel & seen it change tremendously.
11 sticks out in my mind as one of the best games I've ever played. There's a lot going on with story, when you accomplish something it feels really damn amazing, and there's just so much to do.
One of the initial points of the game was to put a focus on group play. Parties of six levelling up together, doing quests and missions, etc. This seems pretty much like a no-brainer for a game that's online and involves multiple people. The one downside was that after you hit a certain level in the game you would plateau and then be stuck waiting for people to invite you into a group if you wanted to level up.
Over the past year or so Square has implemented many new things into the game to make it much more friendly to small groups wanting to adventure & even for those who wish to solo.
I just introduced the fellow I'm dating to the game & he has gotten a job to level 54 (cap is 75) in just two months of casual play. I think for anyone who has played the game before, or is currently playing they'll understand how different it is now than when the game initially began.
On a whole, the game is flawed. It's an MMO, it's bound to be. But it has given me some of my best gaming experiences ever. If you've ever really been into an MMO I think you can say that about that respective game.
Now with a lot of the comments as far as the 11 -> 14 that are showing up in the comments above, & the stuff that is shown in the video, you have to remember that it is going to be its own game and the video is just meant to be fluff/speculation by someone who is excited for the new game.
There is a really great interview up on IGN from the day after the sneak preview aired at E3.

If you read through it you can see that it's not going to be 11-2. They are using similar races to help with familiarity, make it easy for people who played 11 to start out again in a new world, etc etc.
Anywho, it's not an official SE video, it's someone playing around with the E3 trailer, sorry to have rambled on but I'm totally excited for the new game! :)

If it had to be an online game (which I'm not happy about btw) I'd have prefered the races from FFTA/FFXII.
I want to be able to play as a Bangaa or a Moogle.
I still think it was stupid that with all the cool races in FFXII, you could only have one non-hume character. And that was a Viera.
This is interesting! I haven't played Final Fantasy for some time now. But knowing that the FFIV trailer is released, I bet it's gonna be worth a try.
