GamesCom 09: PS3 Slim and Console Price Cut
It's official!! At the Gamescom official Sony Press event, Kaz Hirai took the stage and announced too big things:
- The PS3 is getting a slimmed down version, called the PS3 Slim, that will be released in the first week of September and come with a 120GB HDD, be 33% lighter, and consume 36% less energy than current models. (although, like recent models, it has no backwards compatibility)
- The new model is getting a price tag of only $299, which will also be set in place today for all PS3 models on the market.
Wow, I think we all saw this coming with the Kmart ads and other hints, but it's still great news. Looks like Sony is really pushing to get more units out, and I have to admit that their slimmed down versions of previous PlayStation hardware generations have proven to be popular, so I'm sure this one will do well, especially with the price drop right on its heels. So, for those of you that have been holding your breathe, looks like it's almost time to exhale and shell out $300.

So after all that talk about how a price cut would mean that they'd lose money on every PS3 they sold, does this mean that it has gotten so bad that they're prepared to lose money or something?

I'd love to replace my PS3 with a slim model... but is it PS2 backwards compatible? Sony hasn't said anything about that yet, so I'm a little worried. I specifically got a used 60GB PS3 so that I could still play PS2 games on it since new PS3 models don't have that feature. Shadow of the Colossus and Tales of the Abyss are more important to me than a smaller system.

FINALLY I shall rejoin this generation of gaming. :)
(don't trust micro$oft with it's "Red Ring of Death", and being one of the first to get a Wii, it had issues reading disks. :/ FML)

I'll finally be able to watch that box set of "Pushing Daisies" I got on blu-ray despite not having a blu-ray dvd player:-P
I think along with the announcements for the PS3 Slim and stuff they revealed a PS2 backward-compatibility firmware upgrade as well.

Fantastic! $299 is not bad at all but I heard that Sony would be releasing a 250GB PS3 Slim version. I just hope that this time it would read PS2 games coz the 120GB will not :( I hope they release it out soon before Aion Online is launched.
