Preview: Pokemon Rumble

Like a lot of kids people, I was a big fan of Pokemon: Red and Blue and Pokemon: Gold and Silver. But recently Pokemon has become a thing that I keep buying, being embarrassed about, and struggling to figure out, and then swearing I'll never buy again, not unlike recent Sonic games. I think I've figured out and then forgotten about Effort Values at least three times now. Even though I still like the concept of Pokemon my tolerance for the battle system has been badly poisoned. Which is why I was excited to hear about Pokemon: Rumble, the upcoming WiiWare title due out by the end of the year. It seems to be a simpler take on the idea of Pokemon, swapping out turn based battles for Four Swords Adventures-like co-op dungeon crawling gameplay. Though I must admit, my interest in this game may have something to do with this video of WiiFolder's Josh Thomas and his buddy talking about Pokemon in gym shorts at a pretty suspicious camera angle:

As far as I can tell, in Pokemon Rumble you play as wind up toy figures of Pokemon, and not the Pokemon themselves. You can level up individual Pokemon toys, and learn new melee attacks that map to the 1 and 2 buttons. In the individual levels you, and up to three friends, take your Pokemon toys through dungeons where you fight smaller Pokemon toys, ultimately working your way up to a giant Pokemon toy wound up by an evil winding key. Makes sense? You also have the option to pull your punches on enemies so that you can capture them for your own use. Getting an enemy's HP in the red and then holding back will cause them to be momentarily dizzy, and if you finish them off while dizzy they'll be added to your arsenal. It seems like it could be a lot of monotonous multiplayer fun.
