TGS 09: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers - Trailer
Wow, this exclusive trailer for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers posted over at Destructoid is one of the best trailers I've seen for a Final Fantasy game in a while! It feels sort of like the Godhand trailer, doesn't it? Notice the female Tonberry cameo at 1:37, she looks a lot like Tonbetty from My Life As A Dark Lord.
I'm a big fan of the Crystal Chronicles series. This was the second FFCC game announced, but the sixth to be actually released. I've played all five of the previous FFCC games, though I've yet to beat My Life As A Dark Lord, and was never able to complete the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles due to the nearly-impossible multiplayer setup. Even though most of the games in the franchise feature totally different gameplay, the narrative thread that connects them is great. You really have to complete more than one of the FFCC games to see how they're interconnected, and it's always rewarding to know more about the past and future of the FFCC world.
The official website sheds light on the place of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers in the overall continuity of the series. It's currently the latest game in the timeline, set after a Great War ended in the Lilty tribe destroying the "Yuke Crystal" which apparently resulted in the death of every single Yuke. In the aftermath of the war, the Lilties brought forth an age of science and reason (and airships!) but the destruction of the Yuke Crystal seems to have caused several scattered individuals to be 'cursed' with crystal shards embedded in their skin. These individuals, known as Crystal Bearers, are able to draw magic out of crystals, which are currently only used as power supplies for machines. The protagonist Layle is a Crystal Bearer mercenary who is able to use gravity magic. The antagonist seems to be the last remaining Yuke, named Amidatelion, who is also a Crystal Bearer able to use teleportation magic.
The gameplay features the Wii Remote pointer being used to aim and control Layle's gravity magic, which functions similar to the gravity guns Elebits or Half Life 2. There seems to be a fantasy physics element to it; certain things will react to other things (Cactuar + Water = Giant Cactuar) and as you discover new reactions they'll be added to a list of reactions that you can refer to at any time. Layle will not level up, but he will grow stronger as he acquires new items, similar to the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Though it will be mostly a single player experience, there will be 2 player co-op in certain sections of the game. The game's set to be released in North America on December 26th, 2009. I can't wait!

The original CCs is one of the few games that burned me and had me selling it asap [since I play RPGs for single player, not multiplayer and or MMO typed ones].
I cannot wait for this, though! Finally a traditional RPG with a hero who likes reckless fun with his powers and isn't so serious. No show-stealing multiplayer either is a plus.
Roll on down to Europe soon CBs! ^-^
This is the best the Wii can do? It looks like a game system from 1996.
Not interested...one of the things that attracted me to CC was the racial playstyles, while with this incarnation we're stuck with a human which we can't even customize.
