The Last Ranker - New Capcom RPG Announced With All-Star Dev Team

Last Ranker.png

Capcom has announced a new RPG in development for the PSP that has quite the pedigree of talent behind it. Titled The Last Ranker (which the Star Wars geek in me wants to call The Last Rancor), the game tells the story of Zig, a soldier who wants to fight his way up the ranks of a military organization.

The story doesn't exactly sound like the most compelling narrative out there, but these are still just the early details. The real appeal of The Last Ranker though is the development team behind the game. Phoenix Wright creator Matsukawa Minae is taking the producer role with Seventh Dragon's Niinou Kazuya as producer. Nojima Kazushige has been named as the scenario writer, which should be good news for fans of his past games like Final Fantasy VII and Kingdom Hearts. Music will also be provided by composer Shimomura Yoko of Street Fighter II and Kingdom Hearts fame. Then the whole thing is topped off by character designs by Yoshikawa Tatsuya who previously worked on the Breath of Fire series and Devil May Cry.

Whew, that's a lot of name dropping. So far there has been no announcement regarding a release outside of Japan, but then again the game has just been announced so that may still come later. Here's hoping that The Last Ranker can live up to the fabulous talent behind it. If so, it could quickly find itself in the running for one of the best RPGs on the handheld.
