Introducing The DSi XL

dsill_comparison2.jpg

Following a slew of internet rumor, Nintendo announced today a new edition of the DSi. It's called the DSi LL in Japan and the DSi XL in Europe. Most English-speaking news outlets and game blogs are calling it the DSi LL, even though DSi XL makes more sense to English-speaking audiences, but whatever! It's basically a normal DSi but with bigger 4.25-inch screens and a fat pen-like stylus. It comes out in Japan on November 21 for 20,000 yen (about $220) and is supposed to come out in Europe on the first quarter of 2010. No details on North American launch.

Thanks but no thanks? Personally, my DSi is just on the verge of being too big as it is, I'm not really sure how this is a selling point. Maybe it's for old people? Though I'm sure this likely hastily put together (right?) thing will probably boost sales, I imagine they know what they're doing. I guess. I've never been so thoroughly uninterested by a new Nintendo thing. What do you guys think?

I for one find the DS to be a little hard to hold. We don't all have little kid/drag queen hands. It doesn't look like the upscale will solve any of the ergonomic issues, but that is always hard to tell. I haven't made the DS to DSi jump yet so maybe this will be something to consider if the US ends up getting this option.

With 113 million units sold, Nintendo really does need to boost sales of the DS.

Interesting... This is the first time a major company has tried to remodel an existing system by making it *bigger* so it will be interesting to see how it does. I'm predicting a bomb of GBA Micro proportions, but you never know.

Hmmm. I have to wonder if Nintendo is dissatisfied by the DSi sales (relative to what they want--from what I have heard it's hardly been a flop).

For someone like me, I didn't see any reason to go to a DSi--but for some this is one more feature that may make them consider it. I imagine they really want the DSi to sell big so they can make money off of downloads.

For those of us that don't really port the portable (other than to, uhm, the washroom--oh, come on, we all do it) being bigger wouldn't be a negative at all.

Still, I see no reason to adopt any time soon.

As an owner of a normal DS from it's first year, one that is near death as the screen keeps getting dead spots, I would totally think of upgrading for this. Ideally, if you can get your hands on one of the many point and click games or hidden items games you'll know that it all factors on being able to see things and the ds screen is too small for that, this would make the type of games I enjoy, a little easier to spend time with.

Bradamantium, it IS for older people. That's the reason it exists, nothing else.

You might want to check your facts next time. ;-)

Personally though I'm still happy with my original DS.

Nintendo has stated that North America will get Q1 release like Europe.

I've been expecting something like this ever since they started pitching Brain Age to seniors. I showed Brain Age to my mom when she was still alive, and the first thing she did was reach for her reading glasses, and the second thing she did was squint.

I was expecting it to be something closer to the size of a book, but for my own purposes, it looks like it might be the perfect size. I haven't gotten a DSi and I'm still waiting for that killer app or feature that makes me feel like I need it, but if and when the time comes, this would probably be the one I'd buy.
