New New Super Mario Bros. Wii Items, Enemies, And Story Details

VGChartz has posted some new scans revealing more details about the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The scans reveal new items including Propeller Mushroom (formerly Propeller Suit), Ice Flower (formerly Penguin Suit), the POW Block (sends out a shockwave that seems to disturb floating platforms) and a rolling Donkey Kong-like barrel that seems to function like a shell.
When I played the demo, the Ice Flower power up was a Penguin Suit that also helped you swim and affected the way you walked, but it seems to be replaced with an Ice Flower that only gives you the ice shooting function and an alternate colored costume. I personally don't mind this, the penguin suit looked kinda stupid, plus the Ice Flower would probably be more versatile in more levels. (Edit: Game|Life confirms that the Penguin Suit and the Ice Flower are both in the game as similar-functioning items, like the Tanuki Suit and Raccoon Leaf) The Propeller Mushroom also used to just be the letter 'P' with a propeller sticking out of it, so that change is an obvious improvement. Screenshots also show that as long as one player has a propeller suit, they can be held by the other players and fly together like Sonic and Tails.
There's also details on the story (translated by a commenter on VGChartz):
"Today is Princess Peach's birthday. Mario, Luigi and the Toads gather for a good ol' time. What's this? A big cake has arrived. Whoever could it be from? Oh no. The koopa kids have come flying out of the cake. They are the servants of Bowser. Before any one can react the Princess is kidnapped and taken away in a big flying airship. The Toads are in a panic! Have no fear. Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad and Yoshi are here to save the Princess. They go chasing after the airship."Haha, sounds like Miyamoto got his way. Does anyone else remember the Wired interview regarding Super Mario Galaxy 2 where Miyamoto said:
"They always want to have these dramatic scenes where Princess Peach gets kidnapped, but I always tell them, no, it's fine -- Princess Peach likes cake, so you can just have them use cake as bait to kidnap Princess Peach, and that's enough," he laughed.The scans also show that the game will have 80 stages, and a world map. The world maps and level screen shots show things like different kinds of mushroom houses, caves, haunted houses and dungeons. New Super Mario Bros. Wii comes out in North America on November 15th, Europe on November 20th, and Japan on December 3rd."Glutton" was the word in Japanese he used to describe Princess Peach.
"I was thinking they could have these big ships come in, and they've got these big chains all over them, and they drop a plate down with cake on it," he said.

Am I reading that right? The ORIGINAL seven Koopa Kids?
Damn, they've been missing for over 10 years!
I'll be glad to see them back. I kinda thought Bowser ate them or something...
I too am glad to see the original Koopa Kids back. I always wondered why they dropped them in favor of Bowser Jr.
Yep, call me a super nerd, but I too am totally excited to see the old Koopa Kids back! This new Mario game is looking to be pretty amazing, though I REALLY wish they would come up with an actual title for it. "New Super Mario Bros Wii" is kinda awful. How about use the Capcom strategy and call it "Super Mario Bros 4"? I mean the last time we saw the Koopa Kids it was Super Mario Bros 3, so why not?
Anyway, I'm actually way more excited to play this single player than I am multi. Four player simultaneous only works on A) SSBB, or B) the DS.
@Hodges
I guess they thought focusing on one Koopa Kid would be better [and less work] than seven, but couldn't decide on one and made a new, simple Bowser-alike instead?
Jr was great in Sunshine but past that he just got annoying so it's nice to see some variety again.
I'm very excited about the koopa kids making a comeback
@Avshalon
Actually the last time we saw the koopa kids was in Super Mario World. But I agree.... they should of called this game like Super Mario Bros 5.
@jayoshi
Yeah I realized that about 2 minutes after posting. >_
But, still, they were in the last title that sported both the "Bros" and a number after it, so yeah it should be "SMB4".
Adding "Wii" to the end of titles is super lame! I still think the last Mario Kart should have been called "Super Mario Kart: Now With Less Karts and More Motorcycles".
Last I saw of the Koopa Kids was... Superstar Saga, if I recall. I read that they were gonna be the bosses in Super Princess Peach too, but that idea got scrapped Good to see the seven (now eight) siblings back in action!
Miyamoto's attitude toward stories bugs me a little. He seems to regard plot in low regard.
Apparently Galaxy 2 is going to be watered down in plot even compared to the minimalistic original. I can understand having a simple plot for a Mario game (especially for a good ol' fashion level-based game like NSMBW), but you can only do the bare-bones 'Peach has been kidnapped by Bowser...again' thing by itself so many times in the main series :/
@Carl D
Well even though it was optional, folk still complained about Rosalina's storybook in Galaxy.
Pretty much, Mario fans don't want anything but the same tired 'rescue Princess from Bowser' titbit.
I personally think Galaxy got it spot on, and I'm glad Miyamoto doesn't try to pull off FF 'epic' tales [Sonic 06] or every other FPS and their [pointless] Hollywood plots.
Sorry, but who plays FPS for the plots [yet they're still given alot of it]? It's for the multiplayer alone. I can't see any other reason why they still dominate half the game market anyway.
As you said, no one expects more than a simplistic story from Mario [or Sonic even] anyway, and if they complained about GALAXY's, then well of course the devs are gonna go back to the same old thing. Sad but true.
It makes me want a new LM2 or PM game even moreso...
Who plays an FPS for the plot? What?
I can think of many FPSes that had amazing plots. Half Life 1/2, System Shock 1/2, the Halo series, F.E.A.R., hell, let me go dig through my box of cds....
I play FPSes ONLY for the plot. Well... that and atmosphere (like in Bioshock), but I consider that part of the story.
