RIP Captain Lou Albano
One of our biggest 80's video game icons has passed away. Captain Lou Albano, pro wrestler and manager, friend of Cyndi Lauper and the real life face of Nintendo's Mario died yesterday after an extended illness.
I was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Albano a few years ago at Atlanta's Dragon Con. He was a friendly, upbeat fellow who was more than happy to sign my DVDs of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. While I was a little old for the show when it was actually on, I still remember my brother watching it and "Doing the Mario" along with him.
My memories of captain Lou were more centered around his friendship with pop star Cyndi Lauper and his appearances in her "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "Goonies R Good Enuf" videos. I also have fond memories of his outrageous antics in the pro wrestling scene.
Don't be sad, paisanos, Captain Lou hasn't really died. He's merely one upped and now he's swinging his arms from side to side on the big stage in the sky. RIP Captain Lou, you will be missed.

Oh, Big Lou. I too remember him via Cyndi Lauper. It's funny that her video "She Bops" is where I found out about my first gay mag called "Blueboy". Wow that was a while ago.
I remember my older brother making fun of me for "Doing the Mario" in front of my TV every time. (I ended up just doing it when he wasn't watching.)
RIP Captain Lou - you made video games real for us long before motion capture or FMV, and we're grateful for it.
Saw he died via my twitter feed. I liked the show as a kid, though now I enjoy it for the camp value of the live and animation portions.
I'll be busting out the DVDs again tonight.
I shall be Doing The Mario for him today. RIP, man, and thanks for all the fun.
Oh nooooes, Rest in Peace Captain Lou! This is the first I've heard of his passing. I grew up with him and the WWF back in the day. I never had the chance to see him on the Super Mario TV show. I'll miss that rubber band attached to his face with a safety pin. :(
