Rock Band Network Tools Released

Well a few months ago, Harmonix got us all worked up over the fact they they were going to be releasing tools for the XNA platform to allow anyone to create and upload their own Rock Band tracks to a new network store they are creating. Well, earlier this week, Harmonix finally released the tools necessary to create songs of your own on their site, along with some documentation on how to use them.
The nice thing is that all of the tools that Harmonix is giving out are free and available for both the Mac and PC. They give you a plugin to help facilitate the creation of tracks for Rock Band on the Reaper digital audio workstation, and also give you the network tools to transfer those tracks to your Xbox 360 and create a package of them for use with the Rock Band Network; however, the one catch is Reaper. Reaper is a digital audio workstation that is fairly robust and the Rock Band plugin apparently makes it much easier to create songs for Rock Band using it. The catch is that after a 30-day free trial, Reaper will cost you $60 to use non-commercially. A small price to pay if you find that after 30-days you are still pumping out tons of music.
Overall, this is great news for all those aspiring artists and programmers out there, since it lets you put your creative juices to work and also play around with Rock Band's inner workings. It'll be nice to see what the tools help people produce, plus to see how its partnership with the XNA community goes. So, all you Rock Band wannabes, the doors are open now... go out and make beautiful music.
