Video: Tekken 6 Trailer Is... Unusual
Namco Bandai has released a rather unusual trailer for their upcoming fighting game, Tekken 6. Featuring scenes of fighters from various different disciplines, it focuses on real-world combatants with just a snippet of actual game footage at the end (which is cinematic, not gameplay).
"TEKKEN showcases a diverse cross-section of martial arts styles, varying cultures, and a deep storyline as distinct as the characters in the franchise," said In Joon Hwang, brand manager at NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. "The chance to feature the unique sensibilities and motivations of real professional fighters was a fun, authentic and effective way to underscore the legacy that drives the TEKKEN brand in a way that's cool for existing and new fans alike."
The roster of fighters included in the trailer includes:
World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Evander Holyfield
MMA standout Josh Barnett
Professional boxer Vicente Escobedo
1984 Olympic and Pan American Games Gold-Medalist Henry Tillman
6th-Degree Kenpo Practitioner Tommy Wish
Four-time World Muay Thai Champion William "The Bull" Sriyapai
Defending World Youth Boxing Champion Peter "Lil Pete" Duran
Light-Welter Weight MMA Champion Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy
Five-time National Boxing Champion, 2010 Pan American Games team member and 2012 Olympic Team hopeful Patricia Manuel
MMA fighter and professional skateboarder Jason Ellis
TapouT Clothing founders Punkass and Skyscrape
Professional sumo wrestler Tamir "the Giant Killer" Dolgormaa
2008 Olympian and professional boxer Javier Molina
I've gotta admit, it's a little long for what it is, and while I can appreciate taking a different approach with the marketing, I'm not sure that it's particularly effective. Your mileage may vary, however, as a couple of these guys are a little hot in that kind of dangerous way...

lol I love how each fighter at the end says "this is your fight!" Yeah as if playing 30 minutes of tekken 6 compares to training a life time in muay thai or some other fighting style lmao. That's a pretty pointless advertisement, it doesn't make me want to buy the game it makes me want to give up gaming lol.
I couldn't care less about Tekken after watching this trailer. As far as I'm concerned, they should just stick to making ads like this and I'll be (very) happy ^___^;
The transition between the two parts is pointless to say the least. Style, music, atmosphere.... everything. Completely lost me when the faster music started. I'm not a huge Tekken follower, quit paying attention after the third installment, but ever since then the CG snippets and Tekken CG vids that I saw looked too generic.... same as the previous ones.
Not urging me to buy or play but they made me wanna look at the first part again :>
hmmm...
I didn't like this ad very much at all. I really liked that there was a very masculine female which adds a very nice touch of 'reality.'
Aside from that irrelevant inclusion (since there aren't any female fighters who are that masculine), the trailer was awful.
Seeing those straight meatheads pretty much talk about how much they have to prove their masculinity and how they were turned to fighting because they were bullied or whatever really turned me off. I never let those bullies get to me. For some reason, maybe because of all the love I got from my best friend and family, I valued myself and knew that I was heading in the right direction and I would end up with an amazing life. I kept facing forward and only looked back to learn from the past. Never wanted to dwell on it.
hell, i was bullied all throughout school for being queer, but you know what I did to "prove" myself? I got myself a college degree, working on a master's, filling my head with knowledge and now I "fight" with my brain and will make myself rich based on that.
Fighting games are my FAVORITE genre, and i love taking martial arts classes, but that's where it ends... my brain makes me enough money.
each his own, but my own opinion is just that...my own.
is their core demographic really meathead UFC-loving dudes? they might buy Tekken for the action but surely not for the highly technical combat system!
but what do I know? the only thing I've ever wrestled is my boyfriend
It sounds like Namco-Bandai is just trying to cash in on the recent rise in MMA's (mixed martial arts') popularity.
A very nice idea, even if the execution was somewhat lacking.
Some of the guys interviewed creeped me out a lot. They talked like they were beaten in the head a few times too many ("I like to hurt people", "every man needs to fight" etc.). :(
I also don't understand why they only interviewed one woman, while promoting a game with loads of school girls and busty ladies. I was sure they would've wanted to include at least one of the buxom show-wrestling women. :P
Who needs this stuff!? IT'S THE IRON FIST TOURNAMENT FFS! One of the best damn fighting games of all time is about to hit the 360 and all they can think of is coaxing some slurred inspiration out of holyfield?
Jesus tapdancing christ, this is lame...
i can see where they wanted to go with this, but i'm not feeling it at all. especially the part about men being born to fight, and that's why we have pectorials... to shove our fists through another man's face...
sorry namco bandai, you lost me with this machismo b.s.
just make a good game and we'll come play it, okay? leave the hardcore stereotyping and stories of childhood trauma somewhere else.
