Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Is HUGE!

codmodwar2.jpg

Recently, I had to resist the urge to simply turn around and walk out of GameStop empty handed because the salesgirl (under orders, I know, but still) kept trying to push me to pre-order a copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. I told her I didn't like war games. She insisted that it was going to be huge and everybody else was going to be playing it. I am not a lemming. I also don't like war games, as I mentioned. It was when she started talking about pre-order bonuses that I simply tuned her out. Well, it turns out she wasn't half wrong. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has done some rather impressive business in its first week. It racked up a record $550 million in sales in just five days.

To put that in some perspective, the largest five-day worldwide opening box office gross is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which raked in $394 million. The largest five-day domestic box office gross is The Dark Knight's $203.8 million. The previous videogame record holder before this was Grand Theft Auto IV, which earned $500 million selling 6 million units.

"In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon," said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc. "The title's success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media."

Oh, and on Xbox LIVE, Microsoft is reporting that more than 5.2 million hours of multiplayer were logged on the first day alone, and more than 2.2 million unique gamers played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in one day on November 10, which is a record for Xbox LIVE. And more than 11 million Achievements were unlocked by overachievers in the very first day.

I've gotta say, those are some pretty spectacular numbers, and for a game that I wouldn't have thought to be as widely popular as Grand Theft Auto, given its slightly more specific genre. As I said, I did not purchase a copy, so I'm not one of those millions playing on Xbox LIVE, but apparently lots of other people did, and are. Perhaps even you!

If they're saying that MW2 did better than any movie release because of the sheer amount of people buying it, no. It was the price tag that drove up the sales figures.

Wow now I know what nerds staring at lara crofts boobs feel like. mmmmmmmm

Much like yourself Wootini, I refuse to be a lemming. Count me in as one of the few that did not, and will not, purchase COD:MW2.

Not me. Even if I did buy it, it'd be the PC version because playing FPS games with a controller is like trying to draw with your feet. But even putting that aside, the lack of dedicated multiplayer servers and a server browser kills it.
Console style matchmaking for games like this is godawful, and the main reason I don't play online console games.

Well I did and I'm loving it. I love the COD series and I've been waiting for this one well... since COD4 lol

I don't quite understand why we're lemmings if we bought it. The Single Player Campaign while short, is on par with that of Bioshock and Half Life 2 in my opinion. But I get that a lot of frat boys with little brains buy it. I just wanted to say, as a single player game it's defiantly worthy of looking into (even if its just a rent).

Sniper, I never meant that everyone who bought the game was a lemming. It was that I would have been a lemming if I'd fallen for the sales tactic of "Buy it because everyone else is buying it." I prefer to buy games because I'm actually interested in playing them, thanks!

Well said, Wootini. Sales pitches don't work on me unless I'm already interested in what they're selling, in which case I didn't need the pitch at all.

Unless it was something like "Buy this game, and I'll give you this rare, unopened box of Secret of Mana for the SNES". I'd be all over that!

MW2 made piles of money simply due to the $50-60 price tag on the game. I think Kotaku did a comparison on MW2's figures to the highest selling movie, album and book and in most cases, if the price had been on par, MW2 wouldn't look as impressive, and would in fact be beat.

It's no surprise it made more money than any movie. Average ticket price is $8. MW2 had 3 flavors going. 60, 80, 150.

I personally rented the game and beat it in 3 hours. No thanks. I'd rather drop 60+ on something better.

My response to the enormous success of MW2 is, "Really?" I'm with you, Wootini - zero interest in war games. But I guess it must be a damn good war game.

It's an enjoyable enough FPS, although the online can get a little too intense for me - I can only handle an hour or so online before I get annoyed. One problem I've always found with online FPS's is there's no 'scaled' matching - I always end up fighting lvl 45 pro's when I'm barely at lvl 12 and thus get my ass handed to me.

There really needs to be a way to make this kind of thing 'noob' friendly, even if it's an area limited to people below a certain level.

I've been having an hour of MW2 a day and 2 hours of Brutal Legend to recuperate LOL

Call of Duty is an instant no for me.
I reeeeally don't see the appeal.
And that woman trying to sell it to you sounds immensely annoying. I'd have left the store outright for such BS.

Its success is well deserved. If you like strategic FPS, it's absolutely brilliant. Infinity Ward does an amazing, amazing job on these and it really comes out in the game play. COD3 and MW1 aren't nearly as good.
