Looks Like Dead Space 2 Is Getting Online Multiplayer

deadspace01.jpg

According to a job listing on Linked In, EA is looking for a "Senior Online Level Designer for the Dead Space franchise," and the listed responsibilities include:

  • Conceptualize, script, direct, and build online levels for the game.
  • Own the level design for the online game, be able to work collaboratively with Creative Director and Online Producer to create extremely fun, satisfying and polished multiplayer levels.
  • Drive online design by taking the initiative to bring all parties together to execute on the overall vision for the levels.

It feels almost obligatory now for successful single player games to add multiplayer in their later iterations, even if it doesn't necessarily match what players expect from the franchise. Uncharted 2 threw in a slew of multiplayer modes, each with varying degrees of success, and Bioshock 2 also made waves when its multiplayer modes were announced. Will a multiplayer component of Dead Space be able to stand out enough to gather a strong community of gamers, or will it just be another checkpoint to add to the back of the box? After all the pains that the developers went through to define their game as something beyond your average third-person shooter, I hope they can come up with ideas a bit more clever than the usual "deathmatch/team deathmatch/capture the flag." Hopefully that's why they want to hire someone new!

The listing also reveals that they're coming to the end of pre-production on the game, and should be "ready for production in the next few months, with many of the navigational and combat mechanics in place." With luck we'll hear more about the sequel soon.

Nngh... look I love me some Dead Space, but I don't think this is right. Unless, and this is a big unless, they do some REALLY creative modes. Maybe similar to L4D have a group of, let's call them "Isaac's" try and survive from Point A to Point B while dodging player-controlled Necromorphs. That I could TOTALLY be down for. Or even just have 1 Isaac, that's cool with me, too. But no just straight up Death Match. I mean it CAN be done, but I just don't see that needing to happen.

Also I will accept a Co-Op mode. Some people argue that RE5 wasn't scary because you were with a partner, but I argue it wasn't scary because it was an action game. It was the tone, not the player count. RE0 could totally have been just as scary if somebody could control the 2nd character. So yeah, a separate co-op campaign is good, and in fact could create some great separation moments where you realize just how alone you are.

Considering that Dead Space is quite possibly my favorite game ever, the idea of a sequel (with or without multiplayer) is exciting news. Multiplayer as group of necromorphs swarming on a group of humans would be a nice change of pace.

As long as the sound design is just as good as the first game, you can count me in!!!
