Weekly Xbox Indies - 12/12/09

Gerbil Physics.png

Yay

  • Gerbil Physics - 80 MS points. Gerbil Physics is all about adorable destruction. Each of the game's 24 stages gives you a tower of gerbil blocks and a handful of explosives with the sole purpose of toppling the adorable rodents to the ground. Think of it as Boom Blocks in 2D. The art style is instantly charming and the levels give quite the challenge, requiring precise explosions to only knock down certain blocks. Later on, ropes and disintegrators are added to your arsenal with some excellent puzzles to utilize them. At only $1, this one's an absolute steal.
  • Johnny Platform Saves Xmas! - 240 MS points. The original Johnny Platform game was one of the first greats to hit the Xbox indie section, with simple but fun platforming and some top notch puzzles stemming from the levels wrapping around from left to right and top to bottom. This sequel takes that winning formula and runs with it, adding a new roll move to Johnny's skill set that adds a surprising amount of depth to how he traverses the levels. The character sprites and scenery are colorful and well animated, a significant visual upgrade from the original (which already looked good with it's own unique pixel art style). If you liked the original, or just platformers in general, than you won't be disappointed with Johnny's holiday themed adventure.
  • Chris Unarmed - 240 MS points. Chris Unarmed is a platformer that takes away one of the genre's gameplay staples. As the title suggests, Chris is unarmed, meaning he has no way of defeating the enemies that cross his path. This adds a significant challenge as there are several enemy types with different movement patterns to avoid. The jumping feels floaty at first, but as you get deeper into the game the more sense the controls make given Chris' enemy aversion. Wall jumping also plays a big part in the game, making it a true test of platforming prowess.
  • Runic - 240 MS points. Runic is a very unique take on the match 3 puzzle formula. A board is strewn with colored pieces, and you need to launch pieces from the top, bottom, left, or right side of the board to create matches of 3 or more of the same color to clear the pieces from the board. The ultimate goal in each level is to clear two goal pieces from the board, but the path to reach those goals will take some tricky maneuvering. If you're looking for a new type of puzzle game, give Runic a download.
  • PixelPix - 80 MS points. PixelPix is an enjoyable take on the classic Picross puzzle formula. The game includes 80 puzzles of varying difficulty and size, which is a good deal for the price. Though I do prefer the bonus 3D puzzles found in the Xbox indie game XCross, there is surprisingly little overlap between the two games in terms of puzzles, making this an great download for those not willing to pay XCross's more expensive cost, or a nice addition if you just can't get enough grid-filling action.

Ay?

  • Molly The Were-Zompire - 80 MS points. Molly The Were-Zompire is a campy, self-aware text adventure, and actually pretty fun. It plays out like a choose-your-own-adventure novel, which I must admit I have quite a fondness for, consisting primarily of reading text with an occasional choice to branch the story in one of two ways. There are a ton of different endings to find based on the choices you make, and most of them are actually pretty funny. As for the game's art style, the hand-drawn, kindergarten-quality stick figures actually highlight the game's campy nature. What doesn't help the game is the rare, but still present, grammatical error (they are destroy?). But if you can forgive the one or two grammar slip-ups, this is a much welcomed text adventure that should put a smile on your face.
  • Ikaroids - 240 MS points. Ikaroids is a twin-stick shooter with a story. I can't tell you want that story is though, because the dialog text appears mid-battle and is nearly impossible to read if you plan on surviving. Thankfully, the core gameplay in Ikaroids is fun enough to be enjoyable without a plot to string levels together. Choose from 4 ships with varying stats and blast enemies and asteroids Geometry Wars style. While you're blasting you'll collect all of the typical bonuses like score multipliers, shields, and weapon upgrades. In a nice twist, you can keep your weapons upgraded after you die, elevating some of the frustration that this type of game can often have.
  • Dual Zone - 240 MS points. Dual Zone puts you in control of both a red orb and a blue orb, controlled with the left and right analog sticks respectively. Red and blue enemies then spawn, and can only be defeated by the orb of the same color. Things can get confusing as your mind races to move both red and blue at once, but it never became so much so to the point of frustration. The game is a lot of fun though, even if perhaps slightly lacking in depth.
  • Rate My Avatar - 80 MS points. This should have been a free standard Xbox feature when Microsoft launched Avatars. The Wii has the Check Mii Out channel, PS3 has Home, but the Xbox doesn't really have a place to just see what Avatars other 360 owners have made (1 vs 100 doesn't quite count). Admittedly the Avatar creator isn't the most robust, Nintendo's Miis still claim that prize, but it's a nice addition to the system even if it did take an indie developer to do what Microsoft should have originally.
  • Guardian - 240 MS points. Guardian puts you in a ship orbiting the Earth to defend it from asteroids and the occasional alien. You have no control over your ship's orbit, so the game takes on a strategy element as you plan which asteroids you can go after depending on where in the orbit your ship is. The aiming cursor moves just a bit too slow in my opinion, but the game is still well worth checking out.
  • Hydro Electric Worker - 240 MS points. Like the colors yellow and black? That's the color scheme for this very retro-styled game. It's actually quite a lot of fun as you dodge dogs, crows, and sparking electric currents while trying to repair telephone pole after telephone pole. The obstacles speed up with each new level, while you are also upgrading your pixilated electrician to make for a repetitive but highly addicting experience.
  • Cannon #12 - 80 MS points. Cannon #12 is an interesting version of the typical space shooter. Each level plays out like a boss battle with only one ship to destroy protected by a barrier. After destroying the barrier you need to fly your ship on top of the enemy to get a missile, which is the only weapon that can be used to actually defeat the boss. Meanwhile, satellite drones will be attacking your ship trying to prevent you from getting close. It's fun, if not a bit bizarre that you only get the ultimate weapon by flying on the enemy, though after a couple levels the repetition begins to set in.
  • いっせーのせ!ONLINE - 80 MS points. This is a game straight out of Japan (as if you couldn't tell). Up to 4 people hold their hands out in front of them and take turns predicting how many thumbs will be held up by all of the players. If a player guesses right on their turn then they take one hand out of the middle, with the winner determined by who takes both hands out first. It moves very fast, and is actually a lot more fun than I was expecting. Xbox Live multiplayer is a nice feature too, though it's hard to say if there will be enough people actually going to be playing this online.
  • myChristmas - 240 MS points. While most Christmas apps in the Xbox indie section are content just to decorate trees, myChristmas does much more. Of course, there's a Christmas tree to decorate, but there's also a record player with a number of carols to choose from, a crackling fireplace, and even a customizable grandfather clock. You can leave this room and take your Avatar caroling through a virtual neighborhood, or set the time for Santa's arrival on the grandfather clock. If you're looking for something on your Xbox that reflects the seasonal holiday cheer, myChristmas is your best bet.
  • Duel: The Art of Combat - 80 MS points. This game can best be described as a real-time version of the classic turn-based game Worms. You control a worm as it blasts other worms with various weaponry on a 2D battlefield, and even use a ninja rope to help maneuver around the levels. The game is at its best when played with another person in its split-screen multiplayer mode, so make sure you have someone to play with when downloading Duel.
  • BugRace - 400 MS points. BugRace is a multiplication table edutainment game set up as a board game. Each player is asked to answer a multiplication problem, and if you get it right then you get to spin the spinner to move your ant along the board. For the younger gamer, this shares enough similarities with Mario Party that you can pretty easily trick them into learning math through this game.
  • おいちょかぶオンライン - 240 MS points. I honestly cannot say if this game is good or not. The menus are entirely in Japanese, which I cannot read. In the trial version I chose the first option on the menu and it took me to the Xbox marketplace to buy the game. The second menu option went through several screens of text that I'm assuming are instructions. The third and final menu option quit the game. That was my experience with it. If anyone out there reads Japanese and is brave enough to take this one on, feel free, but the language barrier is too great to allow me to give more detail on this game.

Nay

  • Christmas Tree 3D - 240 MS points. Christmas Tree 3D is exactly what it claims to be. Decorate your virtual tree with a wide assortment of ornaments and watch as the branches sway convincingly from the ornament's weight.
  • Avatar Avanue - 80 MS points. Do you enjoy watching people cross the street? You had better, because that's really all there is to do in this game. You can control the weather, and make cars honk at the Avatars that pass by, but otherwise you're just watching an endless supply of randomly generated Avatars at a crosswalk.
  • Fractal Dive - 80 MS points. Fractals are fun to view because if you zoom in you can see thousands of smaller versions of the original image, which in turn are made of thousands of smaller versions again, and on and on in a mesmerizing reduction in scale. Fractal Dive for Xbox indie games shows a with none of the same appeal. These fractal images are just pictures of fractals, rather than fractals rendered in real-time, meaning that if you try to zoom in the picture just gets pixilated and blocky. If you want to view some actual fractals, try here.
  • Dont B Nervous Talking 2 Girls - 80 MS points. Trying to flirt with a girl to get her phone number isn't something that I imagine most of the readership on this site deal with on a regular basis, but if it was then there is no way that this "game" could help you. Everything about this game is sad, from the representation of women as pathetically simple-minded to the ridiculous trivia questions crammed awkwardly into the game's conversations. If you have any respect for women, yourself, or even just humanity as a species, you will stay far away from this one.
  • Powa Volley Classic - 80 MS points. Powa Volley Classic is the "lite" version of Powa Volley, released in the indie games section not too long ago. It took the slime volleyball gameplay formula and added characters with unique special moves to spice things up. This version is the Classic mode from that game, which removes the unique characters in place of two generic blob-things. If you want to play this then there are a ton of free versions already available online that are a mere google search away.
