539.8 Million In Mobile Game Revenue For 2009

App Scout listed some fascinating numbers with regards to this past year's mobile gaming sales. Apparently, the leaders in mobile gaming have grossed almost 540 million dollars in revenue! Electronic Arts (Spore Creatures) takes an unsurprising lead of 115.9 million. We then have Gameloft (N.O.V.A) at 58.1 million, Glu Mobile (Super KO Boxing) at 38.1 and Namco/Bandai (Time Crisis) rounding it out at 29.3 million.

Along with the numbers, it appears that mobile games are on the rise and could possibly eclipse handheld gaming sales if things remain constant. With the numbers jumping from a negative 19 % in Q3 in 2005 to a positive 17 % in 2009 App Scout also suggests a clear response to the publishers including classic games like Sonic The Hedgehog in their mobile rosters.

I know that I am very curious when a new iteration of my favorite games are ported to my phone, GTA Chinatown Wars being a prime example. While the controls are a bit obtuse with the D-pad on screen, how many of you find yourselves as part of the contributers to the large revenue above and purchase mobile games regularly? How many of you are quite content to play them on your favorite handhelds?

I'm still on the fence about mobile gaming. I hear rumours that DoCoMo (a Japanese phone company) is wanting to break into the American market and they make the gaming phones, so I'll save my interests until I know if that happens or not.
