PS3 Motion Controller Getting Released Fall 2010

sony-e3keynote.jpg

Everyone is jumping on the motion capture bandwagon for "next generation" controllers given the enormous popularity of Nintendo's Wii; Microsoft announced its upcoming Project Natal last year, although most details and supported games are still being kept tight lipped.

Not to be outdone, of course, Sony has announced its own peripheral last year as well. In an apparent attempt to beat Microsoft to the punch, yesterday they sent out a press release declaring that their "PS3 Motion Controller" would be heading to stores this fall.

Utilizing the PlayStation Eye (sold separately!), the wand will allow gamers to control titles using gestures and motion recognition, much the same way as with the Wii today. As with Microsoft's announcement, Sony promises that they will support the peripheral with plenty of games at and after launch. The full press release is after the jump.

(2) Users will need to use the PlayStation Eye camera to enjoy the Motion Controller on PS3.

I'm betting there will be plenty of combo packs available that sell the Eye with the new controller.

Sure... ULTIMATE entertainment system XD With no own ideas!

No, I don't wanna start bashing, but Sony and MS do confirm Nintendo was right with their motioncontroller.

This is partly a responce to Ann, partly not. I want it to be known, I am not a fanboy of any console. I like all of them, and only by the games and actions do I judge.

Sony seems to be dismissive, then scrambles to catch up. "No one wants achievements." Hello, trophies. "Rumble is LAST generation, no one wants that old technology." Uh huh. "Motion control, we have that!" Lovely, Sixaxis, remember Lair? This motion control seems to follow that pattern. What is really bad, is it requires two purchases, (or maybe one expensive purchase). Which brings the question of, if it uses the PSEye and a Motion Control, why not just use the Sixaxis and include a USB tracker devices to place on top for better tracking? Or is the motions there that bad?

All that said, I am holding judgement on the Natal until I get more information. Microsoft has said that they have developers signed up. It sounds much more detailed as a simulation system, with both input and output. Voice command, geasture command, full body tracking. That said, I am worried about how well it will actually work.

My big worry with Project Natal, (and the PlayStation Motion Controling Wand, but I am not sure I am as interested in it any more) is people (particuarlly develpers) WILL see it as 'Just like the Wii!' and 'Wii Ripoff' and not try to push the extra abilities of the system.

I AM critical of Sony, but not cause I have love for another company. The PS3 is just... a sad piece of console history. Like the Saturn, or N64. Hopefuly they will turn out to be more like Nintendo, less like Sega.

I am no fanboy too and like almost all consoles, since there are pros and cons on every system, but I doubt SONY and MS will have that much success with their motion controll.

Lets wait and see, but I doubt NATAL will be very usefull for full "core games" ( I just hate the whole "core" and "casual" stuff) and SONY...? Well, I guess there will be a lot of WW shooters, but what else besides this genre? (Yeah, I tend to see MS and SONYs new generation as 95% pure WW shooter consoles) Another flood of minigames?

The next thing is: if there is that flood of minigames as well, will it sell better than Wii-titles, just because it got HD?

Not to mention I doubt controlling via SONYs "Wiimote" will be very good. It is working with that camera, right? So what if the sun is shining into my living room and the camera cannot "see" anything? I smell the same problems like those from eyetoy.

About buying two things for having motion controll at PS3: Sure, you need that "thing" and the camera, but you need a Wiimote and WiiMotion+ for the Wii as well, if you wanna play certain games. So I don't think it is that much of a deal.

I may repeat myselfe, but I guess I have to wait for a final view on the "new" motioncontroll.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
