Writer's Guild Of America Announce Nominees

Writing, like we used to do!

It is useful to remember that in order to be nominated and win the Writer's Guild's Video Game Writing Award, the game writers are required to have either been or applying to become members of the guild. With that said, here are the nominations:

  • Assassin's Creed II, Ubisoft Entertainment
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Sony Computer Entertainment
  • Wet, Bethesda Softworks
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Activision

Among those choices, there are maybe two with which I would agree, but the rest of them seem a bit... odd. Hence the warning statement about the writers needing to be part of, or possibly part of, the guild itself. Of course, last year's list of nominees also had some confusing selections, and the winner ended up being Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. The winner of this year's award will be announced February 10 at the aptly named Writer's Guild Awards ceremony.

So, in due order, which games do you think deserve an award for their writing for the past year? Perhaps a sparkling gem from the list above caught your eye (like, say, Uncharted 2)? Or did another game whose writers are un-guilded make its case to you?

If it's not Uncharted 2, the award is a bit of a joke.
Those other titles... What were they thinking?

I think it's pretty clear that the competition is a dead heat between Wet and X-Men Origins. With those nominations I'm surprised that House of the Dead: Overkill didn't get nominated. Getting in the Guiness book of records for most F-bombs in a videogame should have earned it an automatic writing award.

Seriously though, Uncharted 2 is the easy victor. I would have also liked to have seen Tales of Monkey Island, Dragon Age, and Mario & Luigi nominated, since I thought they all had fabulous writing.

Dragon Age certainly deserves a nomination but maybe the writers there don't want to join the Guild or maybe they aren't allowed to somehow.

While Wolverine: Origins was a surprisingly good game, the story in the game was really worse than the movie it was based off of if I remember correctly.

I thought that was Rogue Warrior?

I'm not sure BioWare can be part of the guild, as they are Canadian.

I'll also agree that Uncharted 2 is the only title I can see winning this.

Nope, it's House of the Dead, with 189 uses of the F-word, accounting for 3% of all dialog in the game.

Assassin's Creed II and Uncharted 2 are honestly the only games that make any sense there. Didn't play UCII, but I'm willing to bet it had the better dialogue on the whole. Not that I disliked ACII at all. I'm just guessing that the random Italian words probably sit with most gamers as an excuse to seem "cultural". Personally, I found it immersive, but most are hard to please.

I thought the Italian was an awesome touch, but then I am a Spanish speaker and I could actually make out most of it without subtitles..
