You Put A Hex On Me: Civilization V Announced

While it may not have been the first ever turn-based strategy game, Civilization has done a lot of things right in its lifetime, offering players the options of diplomacy, culutral enlightenment, or technology in addition to the classic 'beat up all the other guys' as methods of victory. Plus, there's just something satisfying about being the first to discover gunpowder and enacting explosive revenge on a civ that's been haraunging you since the bronze age.
As the screenshot above indicates, one of the big changes this time around will be a hex-based grid, rather than the squares Civ-players have been staring at since 1991. While more complex polygons may make the game look even more daunting, Firaxis promises that PC players will get some of the benefit of the console version, Civilization Revolution, which included the option of pop-up advisors and a vastly streamlined interface for navigating your chosen peoples through history. The move to hexagons will also make navigation more fair, handling diagonals in a way that's easier to see when you're moving troops as well as allowing for more natural-looking continents and terrain. Civilization V also promises new diplomacy options and even ranged bombardment - no more keeping your catapults on the front lines!
There are scant few screenshots out there, but Civ fanatics can rest assured we'll hear plenty more about the game before the new age of enlightenment dawns this fall!

This does not fill me with hope, or even confidence, instead it fills me with dread. Deep deep dread.
