Details Emerge On The Last Story By Mistwalker

While some fantasies may claim to be final, the last word actually comes from famed producer Hironobu Sakaguchi, who started with the original Final Fantasy and left off at the tenth installment to form his own gig, Mistwalker Studios. Since then, Mistwalker has co-developed a few games, chief among them Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey for the Xbox 360, and now they're looking to expand their profile with what Sakaguchi is calling his blockbuster game. In his own words, he's "putting my heart and soul into this production [...] taking a full swing and making this the best project."

What project? The Last Story, only on the Wii.

Details have been scarce, with the announcement just coming last January and including nothing but a logo. Lately, however, Nintendo has started up the official Last Story blog, and Andriasang has translated the first few columns detailing the world and story of Sakaguchi's best project.

The Last Story takes place in a "world with little steel" - the fantastical architecture is, this time, wholly a product of magic and the medieval society of the world. So far, the only location revealed is Ruli Island, home of the capital city of a strong and affluent empire. In addition to being an important harbor city, Ruli is well-protected by its considerable cannons and a magistrate who seeks more power in magic than most commoners are even aware of.

The city itself seems to be a new type of haven for players, with the producer comparing this game to RPGs where the cities are filled with dead-ends for the sake of easy navigation. "However, the city of The Last Story is expansive, and if you walk a good amount, you'll probably get lost. There are few dead ends, and a large number of narrow roadways."

Finally, the society of Ruli involves a strict caste system based on warriors, with Knights being the well-respected justicars and Mercenaries living a constant life of war and loss, wishing for the safety and respect of Knighthood. This looks to be a fairly complex environment for characters to live in, and should foster some interesting drama once the characters are actually announced.

The Last Story will have more details soon, as it comes out in Japan this year. For now, enjoy these images of Ruli Island!

Lost Odyssey was a great detour in my formerly JRPG-centric RPG games purchases.

This intrigue me much the same [the world is made out of the corpses of two Gods = awesome].

Hope it uses either a turn-based system or something akin to FFXIII's [not FFXII's please]!

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
