Nintendo Patents New Kind Of Cartridge
![]()
Handheld cartridges by Nintendo have held many shapes over the years. Who remembers the original Game Boy carts? They were beastly!
This week Nintendo filed a patent for a different kind of cartridge. Although it cannot be confirmed the pictures make it look as it if it may be for the DS.
The picture also illustrates how the cartridge sticks out of the slot (make the jump for more pictures), much like the development copy of a DS game. The patent application reads:
"broken lines showing of an electronic game machine is for illustrative purposes only."
Now the patent doesn't say it is for the DS but it doesn't flat out deny it either. I think the DS and its further iterations have had a good run so the time may be ripe for a new Nintendo handheld. Could these illustrations be the groundwork for Nintendo's new handheld or perhaps a just a newer, tricked out cartridge that adds a feature like rumble or in game augmented reality?
Only time will tell but for now we at least have these blueprints to stir the imagination.

Nintendo Application Hints At New DS Cartridge Design [Siliconera]

could be a gps module as the antenna would need to stick out as the cart slot in the ds is shielded with metal
Reminds me of the larger cartridge Nintendo used for the motion sensor in WarioWare Twisted on the GBA. My guess is that it's for motion-detecting DS cartridges.
