Possible Dragon Age And Mass Effect 2 Romance DLC?

masseffect2-love.jpg

Leave it up to developers talking freely at GDC to spark a bit of hope to the masses that expected more love interests in this year's big RPG, Mass Effects 2 or last year's Dragon Age: Origins. Apparently when interviewing Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka from Bioware last week at GDC, Kotaku reporter Stephen Totilo apparently stumbled upon some DLC ideas that are currently being kicked around for Bioware games, one of which could be a possible "romance pack" of sorts for their games.

The conversation arrived at this revelation after Greg mentioned that if players really asked for new missions using the new DLC vehicle, the Hammerhead, that they might make more by means of DLC. Part in jest, the comment was made that since a vocal part of the community seems to have wanted more romance options available to Shepard in the game, then maybe they should also work on that too. Greg and Ray's thoughts on the issue were thus:

"You know, It's possible," he said. Mentioning a character from Dragon Age, he suggested there could be a "Take Leliana on a date pack."

"That is a pretty good idea," Muzyka chimed in, sounding as if this was the first he'd heard of it.

"I've mentioned it to the guys," Zeschuk told me and Muzyka. "And maybe we will."

So there you have it. Granted, the conversation didn't really involve the possible inclusion of more LGBT relationship opportunities in the content, but I think we can all agree that there is a portion of the fan base that would be very pleased if they did include such content. I guess fans can hope, and that's about all we'll be able to do for a while, since it seems as though if they were to make the content, it hasn't even started on yet.

Mass Effect, Dragon Age Creators Consider The Post-Release "Romance Pack" [Kotaku]

You have to admire Bioware for having the balls to try and push equality in their games. Likewise, you have to break down and cry at the endless stream of censors trying to stop them.
No developer is willing to have their multi-million dollar project canned because of one over-worried mother caught in a perpetual period. Sadly one is all it takes! I'm not too hopeful about a LGBT romance pack, but it's a nice thought.

Perhaps one day a big developer with an inflamed sense of morality will yell 'fuck it' and push forward with it, regardless of the cost. Perhaps it'll open the floodgates. Nice thought.

You simply won't be getting it for Mass Effect. The team behind it (not Bioware themselves) are obviously against homosexuality as anything other than straight boy wank material.

I could defenitly see the Dragon Age team extend the Leliana idea to Zevran though. In fact if they do it for Leliana, Zevran is almost garantued. As both are the romance options available to both genders which would open the content up to the most people.

I'd buy it! More Garrus romance, please. Also, making other characters and NPCs romanceable would be fine by me too.

And, GayGamer? Chase after BioWare, ask them questions about LGBT content being considered in these DLCs, send inquiries, and while you're at it make them explain/clarify Ray's comments about Shepard being a 'contained' character and thus affects his sexuality. FemShep can be bisexual/lesbian (Kelly proved this), yet DudeShep cannot be bisexual/gay? Even without regard to Asari/Liara and gender, FemShep in ME2 proved with Kelly that it is 'within the character' to be something other than heterosexual. Double-standard, IMO. Something that I feel should be addressed. GG's the only and best place I can think of that is equipped and well-suited for finding out all these answers.

sign me up for those romance packs. I always felt like the romances were somewhat...is convenient the right word for it? It WAS kinda like turning on an option in a menu. I tossed the romance dlc idea a bit on the bioware forums. I'm hoping i got their attention :)

As for LGBT content, a DLC pack sounds like a good way to sneak that in once the Moral Guardian scrutiny dies down. Of course, they'd still have to put a warning label on it or something :/

Limeade is right. Ray Muzyka is spouting the "pre-defined character" excuse when asked about M/M relationships, and happily ignores that the character of Shepard is barely defined at all. He/she has a) no pre-defined background b) no pre-defined gender c) no pre-defined paragon / renegade attitudes d) no pre-defined political views e) no pre-defined romantic interests. These are all choices made by the player.

Even more, there's proof that ME1 contains voice acted lines for a Kaidan/Male Shepard romance, which can be unlocked with hacked save games.

So there's two explanations:
1) EA or BioWare decided to cut the M/M romance because they knew it would alienate the frat boy demographic, and Ray Muzyka is lying.
2) BioWare's writers feel that an epic military hero could not be gay and still be Shepard—while happily perpetuating the stereotype that military women are lesbians.

Either leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
