Video: TF2 + Sidescrolling = Trine Fortress 2!
User mods can end up becoming some of the most creative and ambitious projects. For example, the Make Something Unreal contest has had entries as far back as 1999 as mods of Unreal Tournament - some keeping the shooter theme, but others evolving into squad-based strategy, racing, and even sports titles. Valve's Source engine also likes to flex its adaptability sometimes, up to and including the machinima-dream Garry's Mod, allowing easy access to in-game objects and physics for tooling around. In order to encourage this sort of tooling, the tutorial site Interlopers.net held a modding contest, and the above is one of the entries. Dylan 'Steaky' Loney has put together a few sidescrolling levels using assets from Team Fortress 2, and the results look quite delicious. So far it features one player transforming between three different classes: the Scout to double-jump, the Heavy to bash through walls, and the Sniper to... tame snakes. The jump timing and fall damage seem in line with the first-person version of the game, so it could still use some tweaking to stand out as a fun platformer.
Steaky has already said he plans to release the mod once it's done. However, the video only says 'SideScroller,' so I think what the project needs most is a clever and fitting name. I think I like "Trine Fortress 2," but I've also been kicking around "Team Fortress 2.5D," or even "Team Fortress 2: Episode 3," just to make a point.
Any other suggestions?
