Final Fantasy V & VI Not Coming To Nintendo DS Anytime Soon
The Twitter giveth, and the Twitter taketh away.
Sometimes we get great news about upcoming releases from the casual musings of gaming's higher-ups. Other times, they take notions about games we only hoped were coming out and dash them against the rocks of reality. The latest such casualties are DS remakes of FFV and FFVI, presumably with the full 3D overhaul that graced the last two Final Fantasy titles.
While these titles were never officially announced, the simple extrapolation of one number to the next allowed many a fan to wait in anticipation for their next 16-bit favorite to see a rehaul on Nintendo's capable handheld. Unfortunately, producer Shinji Hashimoto has bad news for those 3D hopefuls:
"As for FF5 and 6, there are technical problems; presently these are also undecided."
There's nothing to indicate what these technical problems might be, but there is always the chance that it's related to the upcoming release of the Nintendo 3DS. Is Square-Enix waiting to develop its top titles on a more powerful system? Will MagiTek armor look remarkably different in 3D than we imagined? We can't know for sure, yet, but by the time E3 rolls around, Nintendo will likely have at least a few big developers on board with devkits for their 3D system, so look forward to some announcements in the next few months.

Please please please please please give us FFVI! Pleeeeeeeeease
I don't mind. Final Fantasy IV for DS was ugly. Embellished 2D would have been better.
It's crazy how many memories came back when I saw those weird 3D renders of the Final Fantasy VI crew. Remember when we thought that's what Final Fantasy VII would look like? And we'd be playing it on the Nintendo 64?
There needs to be more love for FFVI
I agree, t-chan. When I was playing the mediocre FFXIII, I had a sudden vision of Terra, Celes, and Locke in the gorgeous engine they have on the PS3. This became my singular vision from that moment on, and regardless of my future successes, friendships, and romances I will never be satisfied until this is achieved. But I suppose I would settle for a DS remake. I actually thought FFIVDS looked great and I even liked the tweaks that they made to the gameplay.
Damn, that's really disappointing... Hopefully this just means they have even bigger, better plans for remakes to these two awesome entries to the series.
IF they do end up remaking it, however they choose, I would love to see an "un-americanization" of it. A cleaned up translation would be wonderful as well as having their original costumes as depicted in their concept art (ie: tina's hair is green not freaking yellow, relm is a potty mouth instead of saying "fuddy duddy").
I wouldn't even mind if they didn't end up making a game, but a movie instead. The plot was definitely good enough.
The GBA version of FFVI had a really good translation.
I would prefer NOT to have an extremely unamericanized game. That is the sort of thing that gets you the laughing scene in FFX. Or characters like Vanille. Or ten year olds constantly calling twenty year olds "old".
