Will The Next Pokemon Game Be For 3DS?

While several of us are still just getting into HeartGold and SoulSilver, Nintendo is all set to provide new details on the next game in the series. Pokemon fansite Serebii.net has caught wind of the fact that the next issue of the Japanese magazine CoroCoro will include details on the next Pokemon games when it hits newsstands April 15. Even earlier though, Pokemon Sunday is expected to reveal the games in a "shock announcement" during the April 11 episode.

At first thought, the question really seems like a no-brainer. Will the next Pokemon game be exclusive to the recently announced Nintendo 3DS? Of course, you might say, what better way to guarantee the success of their new hardware than to make a launch title out of one of the most popular videogame franchises of all time. However, 3DS exclusivity may not be in the cards. If you thought that the 3DS announcement was rather unexpected, that's because it was, even to Nintendo. As it turns out, Nintendo wasn't planning on announcing their new hardware yet, and only did so to get ahead of the Japanese press that had found out about the 3DS from suppliers and were all set to break the story.

Since these upcoming Pokemon reveals on April 11 and 15 were likely planned far in advance as part of a marketing strategy, it's likely that they were planned without the surprise 3DS announcement taken into account. Of course, this is all speculation at this point. It's entirely possible that the Pokemon reveals will be simply regarding new Pokemon that will appear in the next set of games, and not details about the games themselves. In that case Nintendo could easily build up hype now and spring 3DS exclusivity on gamers at E3 with the 3DS's true debut. And then there's option C, which Nintendo has a unique precedent for following, where the next Pokemon game would be released for DS with some features only unlocked if played on a 3DS. Does anyone else remember the hybrid Game Boy/Game Boy Color cartridges? Could DS/3DS cartridges, with 3D capabilities when played on the new hardware, be on the horizon?

If anything, it would be playable on a ds, but have extra features for the dsi.

Screw all that. Give us another Pokemon Snap!

I suppose the DSi could do something with that..

It'll come out [fully featured] with the 3DS for its Japan launch this year [but obviously playable via a DS as well, sans some features].

That's what I think.
