Gay Days Orlando Gets Geeky
With temperatures rising and the shirts of hunky joggers disappearing it's obvious to see that summer is here and that means one thing for many queer people: Pride season is upon us! Because I live in Central Florida, the first real big event of the season for me is Gay Days at the Walt Disney World Resort. With this year being the 20th anniversary of the event, it's easy to look back and think about how far the event (and the rest of queer-dom) has come since first wave of red shirts set foot on the park. But it's also fun to think about where the event is going judging by the recent additions to the festivities (and I'm not just talking about their focus on bear stuff).
Take for instance, the recently released of the official Gay Days Android app brought to you by the local Orlando lads and ladies at GLBT-friendly developer Werd Interactive. It's got all the information that any Gay Day-er will need to navigate the sea of red shirts and get to the park/party on time. For someone like me, who tends to lose sense of time/space/direction quite easily, this little app is a godsend. I eagerly await the release of iPhone version that should be coming along shortly.
Also of interest at Gay Days is Mari-con, a comics and collectibles show made to benefit The Ave Project. From Anime to Zombies, if it's any part of the comics, cosplay, toys, sci-fi, horror, and tattoo spectrum of geekery, it'll be there with a GLBT-twist.
Hopefully this is just a sign of things to come from GLBT event organizations and we'll see even more cool stuff like this that appeals to our little part of the rainbow in the future.
