Is Silent Hill The Best Videogame Movie?

With the Prince of Persia hitting screens next weekend, LOVEFiLM, Europe's leading film & TV, digital and DVD rental subscription service asked over 1500 film and gaming fans to rate their favorite game-to-film adaptations of the last 20 years.
At the top of the list was Silent Hill, with 15 percent of the votes. Following very closely in second with 14 percent of the vote is Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The first Resident Evil rounds out the top three with 13 percent. I've never seen Hitman, so I can't say if it deserves its fourth place finish in the poll, but I'm pleased to see the underrated Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within in fifth, and the awesomely fun Mortal Kombat in sixth. Not really sure what Super Mario Bros. or Street Fighter are doing in the top ten!
Here's the full list:
1. Silent Hill (2006) 15%
2. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) 14%
3. Resident Evil (2002) 13%
4. Hitman (2007) 10%
5. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) 7%
6. Mortal Kombat (1995) 6%
7. Super Mario Bros. (1993) 5%
8. Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) 4%
9. Street Fighter (1994) 3%
10. Max Payne (2008) 2%
Other - 21%
I have to say, I actually kind of agree with these picks. At least for the top three. Although there's a part of me that enjoyed Resident Evil a little more and would give it the edge over Tomb Raider. But definitely Silent Hill at the top. I'm not afraid to say I really like that movie, and can watch it over and over again. It really captured the spirit of the source material, which is what a successful adaptation is supposed to do. I'd be curious to see how Prince of Persia would rank in this same poll next year... because honestly, not even shirtless Jake Gyllenhaal is enough to get my ass in a theater seat for that one...

Spirits within is on the list but Advent Children isn't?
Yes it is.
@Cerberus635: Advent Children wasn't that great. It was pretty. Very pretty. Just not that great...
Now that I think about it, perhaps Advent Children was left off because it wasn't a theatrical release. Or it just wasn't particularly popular.
AC was very pretty. And cool action. And nice explody things. The story was pretty much every other hero saves the world type story. PoP will probably be more of the same. Nothing wrong with that, mind you. Is SH the best? Well, it was something kinda different anyway. Freakier and more twisted at the least :P
I would have to disagree that silent hill was good. I bought the film randomly (for like 3 dollars) because I had heard it was scary (and I am a huge HUGE horror movie fan) and I turned it off after the first half hour. The acting was soooooo bad that I was laughing at the fact that they were trying.
Resident Evil (the FIRST one) was actually pretty decent zombie flick. I would say that is my favorite out of that list posted. The second resident evil had good action in it (the third should never have been made).
My second would be Hitman (out of that list) for the fact that is had some decent production. Third would have to be Mortal Kombat. Compared to other kung fu movies, that is pretty decent (and a great comedy).
Bizarrely, while I'm utterly disinterested in seeing Prince of Persia, despite loving the games, my non-gamer boyfriend is incredibly excited about it. I can only assume that this is entirely down to the shirtless Gyllenhaal and not some secret, hidden love for cheesy videogame adaptations.
Nice to see Silent Hill getting its due at the top of that list - it's far and away the best of the game movie adaptations, and arguably one of the only ones that's a decent genre movie in its own right, even if you ignore its videogame roots.
What are you people on? FFVII wasn't THAT amazing and Advent's Children was certainly not that good, either.
I'm not surprised Silent Hill tops the list. It really captured the feeling of the game more than any of those other movies, and looking at the list, I can see that people are using that to gauge most of the movies on there.
And to poor, poor Wootini, I can't believe you wouldn't pay to see Jake shirtless. That man, ooh! /melts/
I would have to agree with Silent Hill being up there. The movie is not only cinematically beautiful but some of the monsters can even be compared to Guillermo Del Toro's creations in terms of presentation and movement. It is somewhat obvious, but I enjoyed the way that they added the nuances of survival horrors allowing those who play them to feel like they are in on something. For example, the loss of the knife when they jumped window to window and the lack of offensive abilities of Rose (main character) and also the camera movements. This movie is not perfect by any means but I believe it stayed true to the game more than many other videogame movies has and was entertaining at the same time. And in terms of acting, all the actors in the movie are relatively good actors and it seems they have also taken in to consideration the overly ominous, subpar voice acting and played tribute to it in the movie from the games. However, the little girl's acting was embarrassing at times.
Also seeing it in theaters, the siren was amazingly intense.
Silent Hill is one of my favourite overall movies, never mind just video game adaptations.
Meh, not seen SH movie yet and not too interested in it.
For me though the first Resident Evil movie is the best videogame movie. I loved it. It captured the atmosphere of the early games so well.
I also agree with the Tomb Raider movie. Angelina was a great casting decision for Lara. She fits the role perfectly.
One critique I have is that IMO the Mortal Kombat movie (only the first one mind you) should be higher up.
It was a great movie for it being based on a fighting game. The game's characters came out very well and the fights were great too.
I'd have to agree with Silent Hill. It wasn't the best movie ever and it didn't completely make sense within the SH storyline but it was a good movie worth watching, and (sadly enough) tops most gamers' lists for "best video game movie... so far".
I am also a big fan of the RE movies, even the most recent one. The first and second ones felt more relevant to the series but they did a good job of capturing the feeling of the games (even though the action in the movies is over the top).
I have a little bias towards Silent Hill to begin with but with that said, the monsters and the environment of the otherworld was enough to make me love the movie. It had its flaws but seeing the janitor come out of that bathroom stall was one of the most sexiest things ever.
Sexier than shirtless Jake. Their non-Persian accents turn me off.
