Opinionation: Distinct Downloadables

If there's one thing that's been a bit of a double edged sword with this generation of consoles it's been DLC. We've all seen downloadable games priced too much, just like they're retail counter parts, but occasionally we see them priced really well, even if only temporarily. And then there's add-on stuff like additions levels, characters, and a potpourri of other extras ranging everywhere from Call of Duty's Stimulus Package at $15 to Rock Band songs that go for $2 a pop.

I know that I've spent quite a bit of coin on stuff like this, but this past weekend I was able to purchase something really special. Well, it's special to me at least. See, as a young queer lad growing up just a hop, skip and jump from Canadian boarder in Vermont I got exposed to a lot of "uniquely Canadian" things, especially their TV. Yes, I loved watching Degrassi, but that's only the surface. There were awesome shows like He Shoots, He Scores!, a dramatic téléroman that follows a plucky pair of rookies in the National Hockey League. Think of it as Dynasty in skates. There were also unedited episodes of The Kids In The Hall. But one of the coolest things about catching Canadian TV was getting to see some of the video music videos they would show. Now you kids might not remember a time before the YouTube, but for a little gayling like me, trapped in rural Vermont, getting to see imported music videos were a real, rare treat. They'd always be a little weirder than whatever MTV had on at the time with artists I had never heard of and just a touch gayer. Ever since then I've always had a thing for French dance and pop music. There's just something about it that reminds me of staying up way to late in front of the TV.

Well fast forward a decade or two-ish to this past weekend as I was strolling down the virtual aisles of Singstar's online store and I rediscovered this little gem named Boule De Flipper sung by Corynne Charby. I've had a copy of the song for ages, but I never thought in a million years that Singstar would actually bring over a non-English vocal from my past. Ms. Charby may not be Canadian, but the memories of those old videos came flooding back to me while I sang the song this weekend. The oddest thing about the whole thing is that while I don't speak a word of French, I was able to do pretty well score-wise while keeping up as best as I could. I'm probably one of the very few people in my neck of the woods that purchased this song, but I'm so glad that the Singstar overlords decided to bring it over here. I don't there there's a piece of DLC I appreciate more.

This got me thinking about you, dear reader. What's your favorite piece of DLC that you've downloaded? I'm sure there's something that you've got that's totally made a game or two for you personally. Maybe it was a level set that brought a bunch of people back into multiplayer. Maybe it's that weird, quirky song on a music game that "only you" can truly appreciate like my silly story above. Whatever it is, I want to hear about it. Head to the comments and tell me what you're favor piece of DLC has been.

I believe it's Poutine. French fries + cheese curd + gravy.

Thanks for letting me know; but now I am even more disturbed by it!

Correctamundo on the Poutine. Kids today are calling it "Sick"

I think this article is 10 years ahead of itself. My crowd of gay gaming friends have little or no DLC on their HDs.

Then again, we're all on PS3 fats and worry about losing content.

BJD, that is indeed poutine and it is delicious! You haven't lived until you've tried it.

I've spent a small fortune on Rock Band DLC. Every Tuesday, Harmonix comes bearing great, new stuff I've never heard of before, as well as stuff I grew up with in the 90's that I've all but forgotten about (Luscious Jackson's Naked Eye comes to mind), and it has made Tuesday my favorite day of the week.
I think my favorite piece of DLC isn't quite out yet. I've been following a local pop rock/chiptune band named I Fight Dragons since shortly after their formation last year, and I've thought some of their songs would be perfect for Rock Band. In the past year, they've made quite a name for themselves in the chiptune scene, even headlining a show which Anamanaguchi opened for, but of course, chiptunes are a little too niche to ever appear in Rock Band. Rock Band Network has changed that, though, and I Fight Dragons' song No One Likes Superman Anymore is confirmed to be coming to the network. I could not be more excited about this, and for the world of other fantastic, niche music that has now been given the opportunity to be played in probably my favorite game of all time. Viva la Rock Band Network!

I get worried about the future of DLC because its not the same as owning the media itself.

When i pull out an old PC Engine game i can play it because i have the HU Card of the original game to play it on the Turbo Duo.

In years to come when the PS3 is old school and they shut down the servers for it, and all i have is whats on the Hard Disk. (Lets say that fails with no other backups) All i will have is the game disc themselves but what will become of the following..

I have some game disc that require patches to play decently.
no servers = no Patches)

I have a game disc that i have bought over $XX worth of various DLC
(no servers = no DLC)

Then Lastly PSN Download only games.
(no servers = $$$ lost to oblivion)

I realize there are many download able game options out there today. so maybe I'm just being silly for nothing or maybe its the old school, i like to hold a game in my hand kinda guy and the younger generation could give a flip.

Theirs no clear answer yet. I expect its something I'll just have to deal with regardless.
