PS3 Gets MUBI
This is an announcement primarily for our European brethren, but it appears that Sony is teaming up with MUBI to bring you more films to the PS3. What is MUBI?
From their own words:
his is not a simple virtual videostore; we emphasize quality over quantity. You'll find undistributed festival gems ripe for your discovery, your favorite recent independent and art-house releases. Names like the Coen brothers, Godard, Kitano, Almodóvar, Tarantino, and Van Sant are some we'll bring home to you.
Instead of the latest blockbusters, you should expect something more from the arthouse scene, or people who call themselves auteurs. The service will allow you to watch on your PS3, log on for discussions of the films (for instance, they posit you can try and explicate what exactly those frogs meant in Magnolia), creating lists, becoming fans, and treating the service more like a social network than a complete rental service.
They also state they will bring various features from film festivals around the world, restrospectives, and online premieres. Of what, and when? I would guess various interviews with directors and trailers.
The initial launch is to include these countries: UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Iberia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, Nordic countries, Australia and New Zealand. There are plans to launch in other countries, but we will have to wait for further announcements on that.
I, for one, would not mind such a service in the slighest. Though it begs the question of how much I would want to keep my Netflix account if such a service existed. Then again, my taste in films generally goes more in the direction MUBI seems to promote.
